Maria dalle Carceri facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Maria dalle Carceri (died 1323) was a powerful ruler, known as the sovereign marchioness of Bodonitsa, from 1311 until 1323. She took over after her husband, Albert Pallavicini, passed away in 1311. Even though she managed to keep her territory from being fully controlled by the Catalan Company (a group of soldiers), she still had to pay them a yearly tribute of four warhorses.

Maria came from a noble family from Lombardy in Verona, Italy. Her family had traveled to Greece during the Fourth Crusade many years before. She was the daughter of Gaetano dalle Carceri and inherited a part of the large island of Euboea. She married Albert, and they had a daughter named Guglielma Pallavicini.

Protecting Her Lands

After the Catalan Company won a big battle at Halmyros, Maria became worried about protecting her lands and her daughter's future. She decided to marry again quickly to find a strong husband who could help defend their possessions. She married Andrea Cornaro. When Andrea passed away, her daughter Guglielma inherited the entire marquisate of Bodonitsa.
