Marià Aguiló (born in 1825, died in 1897) was a Spanish poet and an expert in languages, also known as a linguist. He was born into a wealthy family and showed a strong interest in Catalan culture from a young age.
Early Life and Work
Marià Aguiló studied law in Barcelona. He was one of the people who started the Renaixença movement. This was a special movement in the 1800s that aimed to bring back and celebrate Catalan culture.
Aguiló became the director of the library in Valencia Province. Later, he directed the library in Barcelona. He helped publish many important old books written in Catalan.
His Contributions to Language
Marià Aguiló was very dedicated to studying the Catalan language. He traveled to different places where Catalan was spoken. He also looked through old records and documents. Through this work, he collected a huge amount of words and language information.
He put all this information together to create his famous dictionary, called Diccionari Aguiló. This dictionary was a very important tool for understanding and preserving the Catalan language.
He also wrote a collection of popular romantic poems called a romancero. His poems were special because they showed his deep understanding of classic Catalan literature and old stories from the region.
