Mariana Gheorghe (born in 1956) is a very important Romanian business leader. She was the first woman to become the top boss, or general manager, of Petrom. Since June 15, 2006, Mariana Gheorghe has been the main executive director of Petrom. She took over from Gheorghe Constantinescu. Later, in April 2007, she also became the President of the Petrom Directorate. This happened when Petrom started using a new way to run the company.

Her Education

Mariana Gheorghe studied a lot to prepare for her career. In 1979, she finished her studies in International Relations at the Bucharest Academy of Economic Studies. Ten years later, in 1989, she also got a degree in Law from the University of Bucharest. To further her knowledge, she went to the London Business School in 1995. There, she took a special program about how companies manage their money.

Her Career Journey

Mariana Gheorghe started her career in 1979. She worked at two Romanian companies, Policolor and Chimica / Romferchim, until 1991.

From 1991 to 1993, she worked for the Romanian Ministry of Finance. Here, she helped lead the international finance team.

In 1993, she joined the European Bank of Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). She started as an Associated Banker and worked her way up to Senior Banker. In this role, she helped with banking in places like Southeastern Europe, the Caspian Region, and the Caucasus.

When Petrom became a private company in 2004, Mariana Gheorghe joined its board of directors. She represented the EBRD. Then, on June 15, 2006, she was named the main executive director of Petrom.

Mariana Gheorghe has received many important awards for her work:

  • She was the first Romanian executive to be on the "Most Powerful Women in Business" list by Fortune magazine. She ranked 27th.
  • The Marketer magazine named her "CEO of the Year" in 2012.
  • Unica magazine put her at number 1 on their "Top Successful Women" list.
  • Business Magazine named her "Most Admired CEO" for two years in a row (2010 and 2011).
  • Forbes Romania called her the "Most Influential Woman in Romania" in 2012 and 2013.
  • Business Review magazine ranked her 1st on their "Business Leader of the Year" list.
  • In 2014, she received a special honorary degree from the West University of Timișoara.
  • In 2014, Forbes Romania listed her as 5th in the "Top Most Influential Women in Romania."

Mariana Gheorghe is also a member of several important organizations:

  • She has been on the Board of Directors for the Foreign Investors Council (FIC) in Romania since May 2012. She was also the president of FIC in 2010 and 2011. The FIC is a group of 123 international companies that work to help Romania's economy grow.
  • She is the President of the Institute for Corporate Governance (ICG). This group helps companies be run well and fairly.
  • She is the Vice-President of Aspen Institute Romania.
  • She is a member of the World Energy Council (WEC). This group focuses on global energy issues.
  • She is a member of the Romanian Association of the Roma Club (RAoRC).
