History
In late 2004, the Romanian government sold Petrom to the Austrian oil company OMV. This was the biggest sale of a state-owned company in Romania's history at that time.
Before 2005, Petrom owned six platforms for drilling oil in the sea. Five of these were sold to another company, Grup Servicii Petroliere.
In January 2006, Petrom bought OMV's businesses in Romania, Bulgaria, and Serbia and Montenegro. This meant that OMV's gas stations became part of Petrom. However, they still kept the OMV name.
From January 1, 2010, the company officially changed its name to OMV Petrom.
In April 2010, OMV Petrom started new projects in electricity. They bought a company that was building the Dorobanţu Wind Farm. This farm uses wind to make electricity.
On May 18, 2010, OMV Petrom finished an important project in the Black Sea. They worked on the Lebăda Est and Lebăda Vest oil fields. This work was expected to help them produce more oil in 2010.
In June 2010, OMV Petrom started a new gas delivery system called Hurezani. This system helps to send gas into the national network more smoothly. It is especially useful when there is a lot of pressure in the gas system.
In July 2010, OMV Petrom signed a 15-year deal with Petrofac. This company helps to improve oil production. They planned to increase oil production by at least 50% in the Țicleni area of Romania.
On December 2, 2010, OMV Petrom opened its new main office, Petrom City. This building is in northern Bucharest. About 2,500 employees from different offices moved there.
In 2010, the Hurezani gas delivery system was fully opened. It included a new compressor station and new pipes. This project cost about 135 million Euros.
OMV Petrom stopped buying oil from Russia in April 2022. They decided to buy oil from other places, even if it cost more. At that time, it was the biggest energy company in Romania.
In December 2022, a Romanian investment fund sold its shares in OMV Petrom. However, OMV in Austria still owns most of the company. In early 2023, OMV Petrom announced that its income in 2022 was much higher than in 2021. This confirmed its position as the largest company in Romania.
In February 2023, Christina Verchere, the CEO, said that OMV Petrom was close to starting a big gas project. This project, called Neptun Deep, is in the Black Sea. They expect to start getting gas from it by 2027.
The Romanian government wanted OMV Petrom to pay more money from its large profits. In March 2023, lawmakers were working on new rules for this. OMV Petrom had said it didn't need to pay these extra amounts under the old rules.
Operations
OMV Petrom works in many countries besides Romania. These include Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary, Moldova, Kazakhstan, and Iran.
