Growing Up in Poland
Marianna Sankiewicz was born in a small town called Przerośl in 1921. Her parents managed a hostel in Wigry National Park. She went to high school in Suwałki and finished in 1939. Marianna was also a member of the Polish Scouting Association, which is like Scouts in other countries.
Helping During World War II
In September 1939, Germany invaded Poland, starting World War II. Marianna lived in different places during this difficult time. In 1941, she worked in a cafe in Vilnius, Lithuania. The next year, she joined the Home Army, which was a secret Polish army fighting against the invaders.
In 1942, she was sent to Germany and had to work there. She secretly gathered information about new missile weapons, like the V1 and V2 rockets, being developed in Peenemünde. This was very dangerous work. In 1944, she was arrested and questioned, but she survived.
After the war ended in 1945, Marianna moved to Gdańsk. She started working at Polskie Radio, a Polish radio station.
Education and Her Amazing Career
In October 1945, Marianna began studying radio technology at the Gdańsk University of Technology. She earned her master's degree in electrical engineering in 1950. While studying, she was active in student groups, including the Academic Scout Circle.
Later, she started teaching at the same university. In 1968, she earned her doctorate degree for her research on "stable negative resistance." This was a big achievement!
Also in 1968, Marianna and her husband, Gustaw Budzyński, created the Electrophonics Laboratory. This lab focused on the science of sound. Because of their work, the university started a new and unique program in sound engineering in 1970. This program taught students how to work with sound for radio and TV.
Marianna also trained people at Polish Radio and TV stations across Poland. She taught them about sound and acoustics. From 1970, she became an associate professor. For many years, she was a leader in her department, like a vice-principal.
In 1981, she made history by becoming the Vice-Rector for Education at Gdańsk University of Technology. She was the first woman to hold such a high position there after the war! In 1982, a special Department of Sound Engineering was created at the university.
Marianna Sankiewicz-Budzyńska was an expert in electronics and acoustical engineering (the science of sound). She was also a member of important science groups, like the Acoustics Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
In 1991, she helped start the Polish section of the Audio Engineering Society (AES). She became its leader. Later, she was even elected vice-president of the AES for Central Europe. She helped create new AES groups in other countries like Belarus and Ukraine.
Marianna Sankiewicz-Budzyńska retired in 1992 after a long and successful career.
