Marianne and Mark is a book written by Catherine Storr in 1960. It's a follow-up to her earlier book, Marianne Dreams (1958). This story continues the adventures of Marianne and Mark. Unlike the first book, Marianne and Mark focuses more on the challenges of growing up. It has fewer magical parts, but there might still be a hint of fantasy.
What the Story is About
Marianne is now fifteen years old. She goes back to Brighton, a town where she got better from an illness when she was ten. But Marianne is disappointed. She finds Brighton lonely and boring. She starts spending time with two local girls, Alice and Josie. However, they don't have much in common.
One evening, Josie's friend Billie tells them about a fortune teller. This fortune teller supposedly gives very accurate readings. Marianne doesn't really want to go, but she joins the girls anyway. She is amazed when the woman knows many things about her life. This includes details about her illness from five years ago. The fortune teller tells Marianne that she won't be lonely for long. She also says Marianne will soon find romance.
Because of this, Marianne agrees to go on a date with a boy named Alan. She doesn't know that Alan used to be Billie's boyfriend. This causes problems, and Marianne loses the few friends she had. After Alan also leaves her, she is all alone. Then, she meets Mark. He is a boy from London. It turns out he is the same boy she shared a tutor with in Marianne Dreams, but they never met back then. Marianne and Mark enjoy the last few days of the holiday together. They promise to meet again in London.
