The Story of Marianne Dreams
The book is about a young girl named Marianne. She is very sick and has to stay in bed for a long time. To pass the time, Marianne starts drawing a picture. This drawing becomes a magical world she visits in her dreams.
In her dreams, Marianne is inside the picture she drew. As she gets sicker, she spends more time in this dream world. She tries to change things in her drawing to make her dream world better. But sometimes, her changes make things worse instead.
Marianne is not alone in her dream world. She meets a boy named Mark there. Mark is also sick in the real world. Together, they share adventures and challenges in this strange, drawn-out world.
Catherine Storr later wrote a sequel to this book. It was called Marianne and Mark.
Marianne Dreams on Screen and Stage
Marianne Dreams has been made into different shows. It has been adapted for TV, movies, and even an opera.
TV Series
In 1972, a British ITV children's TV series was made. It was called Escape Into Night. This show followed the book's story very closely.
Movie Adaptation
The book also inspired the movie Paperhouse. This film was released in 1988. It took some ideas from the book but changed other parts of the story.
Opera and Play
Catherine Storr herself adapted the book into an opera in 1999. The opera, also called Marianne Dreams, had music by Andrew Lowe Watson. It was first performed in 2004.
Later, in 2007, a new play based on the book was created. It was directed by Will Tuckett and written by Moira Buffini. This play was performed at the Almeida Theatre.
