Mariano Rubio (born 14 November 1931 – died 4 October 1999) was an important Spanish economist. He served as the head of the Bank of Spain from 1984 to 1992. He later left his position due to an investigation related to a financial matter.
Early Life and Education
Mariano Rubio was born in Burgos, Spain, on 14 November 1931. He first studied law but did not finish his degree. Later, he went to the University of Madrid and earned a degree in economics. During his time at university, he was part of a student group. He faced challenges because of his beliefs against the government at that time.
Career Highlights
After leaving Spain for a short time, Rubio worked in Paris at the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. He returned to Spain in 1963 and started working for the government's treasury department. In 1965, he became a deputy director in the research department of the Bank of Spain.
In 1970, he became a general director in the finance ministry. He held this role until 1972. The next year, he was named the head of the Enagás company. From 1977 to 1984, he was the deputy governor of the Bank of Spain. In July 1984, he became the governor of the bank. This was a very important job.
During his time as governor, Spain's financial system changed a lot. It became more open and modern. In July 1992, Mariano Rubio left his role as governor. He was replaced by Luis Angel Rojo.

Mariano Rubio was married two times. His first wife was Isabel Azcárate. Later, in January 1988, he married Carmen Posadas, an author from Uruguay. Mariano Rubio passed away in Madrid on 4 October 1999, from colon cancer.
