Marie of Harcourt was an important noblewoman who lived a long time ago, from 1398 to 1476. She held significant titles in France, including Countess of Aumale and Baroness of Elbeuf from 1452 until her death. Her life involved family, marriage, and managing her family's lands.
Marie of Harcourt's Early Life and Family
Marie was born on September 9, 1398. She was the oldest daughter of John VII of Harcourt and Marie of Alençon. Her father was a powerful noble, holding titles like Count of Harcourt and Aumale, and Baron of Elbeuf.
In 1416, when she was about 18 years old, Marie married Antoine of Lorraine. He was the Count of Vaudémont and lord of Joinville. Their marriage helped connect two important noble families.
Family Lands and Inheritance
When Marie's father passed away in 1452, there was a disagreement over who would inherit his lands and titles. Marie wanted to claim all of her father's properties. However, her younger sister, Jeanne of Harcourt, also had a claim.
By 1454, they reached an agreement. Jeanne became the Countess of Aumale. Marie received the titles of Countess of Harcourt and Baroness of Elbeuf. These lands were very important and were meant to go to her second son, John. Sadly, John passed away in 1473, before his mother. Because of this, the lands eventually went to Marie's grandson, Rene.
Marie of Harcourt's Children
Marie and Antoine had several children who went on to have important roles in society.
- Frederic II of Vaudémont (1428–1470): He became the Count of Vaudémont. In 1445, he married Yolande de Bar. Yolande was the older sister of Margaret of Anjou, who became Queen of England. Frederic and Yolande had six children together.
- Jean of Lorraine (died 1473): He was meant to inherit the titles of Count of Harcourt and Aumale, and Baron of Elbeuf. However, he passed away before his mother, Marie.
- Henri (died 1505): He became an important church leader. He served as the bishop of Thérouanne from 1447 to 1484, and then as the bishop of Metz from 1484 to 1505.
- Marie (died 1455): In 1450, she married Alain IX, who was the Viscount of Rohan.
- Marguerite of Lorraine (died before 1474): She was known as Dame d'Aerschot and de Bierbeke. In 1432, she married Antoine I de Croy, Seigneur de Croy.
