Marie d'Alençon (born 29 March 1373 – died 1417) was an important French noblewoman. She was a Princess of the Blood, meaning she was related to the royal family of France. Marie became the wife of John VII of Harcourt, who was a powerful count.

Marie's Family Background

Marie was born on 29 March 1373, at the Chateau d'Essay in Orne, France. Her father was Pierre II, Count of Alençon (1340–1404). He was a nephew of King Philip VI of France, making Marie a "Princess of the Blood." Her mother was Marie Chamaillart.

Marie's father, Pierre, became a knight in 1350. He was captured during the Battle of Poitiers in 1356. This battle was a big event in the Hundred Years' War. Pierre was held hostage in exchange for King John II of France. He finally returned home in 1370.

Pierre married Marie Chamaillart in 1371. They had eight children together. Marie d'Alençon was their oldest child.

Marie's Siblings

Marie had several brothers and sisters:

  • Catherine of Alençon (born 1380 – died 1462). She married two times. Her second marriage was to Louis VII, a Duke from Bavaria.
  • Jean, Duke of Alençon (born 1385 – died 1415). He was a duke and fought in the famous Battle of Agincourt. He married Marie of Brittany. They had five children.

Marie's Marriage and Children

Marie d'Alençon married John VII of Harcourt, Count of Harcourt and Aumale. They were married in Paris on 17 March 1390. Marie was almost 17 years old at the time. John was the son of John VI of Harcourt.

Marie passed away in 1417. This was about two years after her husband, John, was captured. He had fought bravely at the Battle of Agincourt. The English troops, led by King Henry V, won that battle. John was taken prisoner, but he lived until 1452.

Marie's Children

Marie and John had three children:

  • John VIII of Harcourt, Count of Aumale (born 1396 – died 1424). He was a French commander in the Battle of Verneuil.
  • Marie of Harcourt, Countess of Aumale (born 1398 – died 1476). She married Antoine of Vaudémont, a powerful count. They had five children. One of their sons was Frederic II of Vaudémont. He married Yolande de Bar, who was the older sister of Margaret of Anjou, a Queen of England.
  • Jeanne of Harcourt, Countess of Harcourt (born 1399 – died 1456). She married two times. Her second husband was Bertrand de Dinan, a Marshal of Brittany.
