Yolande (born November 2, 1428, in Nancy – died March 23, 1483, in Nancy) was an important noblewoman. She held the titles of Duchess of Lorraine and Bar.
Yolande was the daughter of Isabella, Duchess of Lorraine, and René of Anjou. Her father was a powerful ruler, known as the King of Naples and Duke of Anjou, Bar, and Lorraine. Even though Yolande had control over large areas of land, she chose to give her power and titles to her husband and then to her son. Her younger sister was Margaret of Anjou, who became the Queen of England.
In the 1800s, a play called King René’s Daughter made a romantic story about Yolande popular. In this play, she was shown as a beautiful princess who was blind and lived in a hidden garden. This story was later turned into an opera called Iolanta by Tchaikovsky. However, there is no real proof that Yolande was ever blind.
Her Marriage and Family
In 1445, Yolande married her second cousin, Frederick II, Count of Vaudémont. Their wedding took place in Nancy. This marriage was a special agreement between their families. It was made to end a disagreement between Yolande's father, René of Anjou, and Frederick's father, Antoine of Vaudémont. They had been arguing about who should rule the Duchy of Lorraine.
Yolande's Children
Yolande and Frederick had several children:
- René (1451–1508): He became the Duke of Lorraine. In 1485, he married Philippa of Guelders.
- Nicolas of Lorraine: He was the Lord of Joinville and Bauffremont. He passed away in 1476.
- Peter of Lorraine: He died very young, in 1451.
- Jeanne of Lorraine (1458–1480): She married Charles IV, Duke of Anjou, in 1474.
- Yolande of Lorraine: She died in 1500. She married William II, Landgrave of Hesse, and they had children.
- Marguerite of Lorraine (1463–1521): She married René, Duke of Alençon.
Her Time as a Ruler
In 1473, Yolande's nephew Nicolas died. This meant she inherited the Duchy of Lorraine. However, she immediately gave this title and power to her oldest son, René II.
Then, in 1480, her father passed away. Yolande did the same thing with the Duchy of Bar, giving it to her son René II.
Yolande died on March 23, 1483. She was 54 years old. Interestingly, this was also the birthday of her sister, Queen Margaret, who had died the summer before.
