Early Life and Education
Marie-Elmina Anger was born on December 24, 1844. Her birthplace was Pointe-aux-Trembles, which is now known as Neuville. Her parents were Séraphin Anger and Rose de Lima Anger.
She received her education from the Good Shepherd Sisters. This was in Québec.
Becoming a Nun
In 1860, Marie-Elmina decided to join the Good Shepherd Sisters. She became a "novice" that year. A novice is someone who is learning about life as a nun. Three years later, in 1863, she took her "vows." This means she made special promises to dedicate her life to God.
Discovering Her Artistic Talent
At first, Sister Marie de Jésus was assigned to teach. However, her artistic skills were soon noticed. She had a special talent for painting. Because of this, she began taking private art lessons. Her teacher was Eugène Hamel, a well-known portrait artist.
Her Art and Legacy
Sister Marie de Jésus painted more than sixty artworks. Most of these were on religious themes. You can find her paintings in churches across Quebec. Some are also in Ontario and New England in the United States.
