Marie Redd is an important politician from West Virginia, a state in the United States. She was a State Senator for the Democratic Party. Her district, the 5th district, included Cabell County and a small part of Wayne County.
In 1998, Marie Redd made history. She won against the Republican senator, Thomas F. Scott. This made her the very first African-American state senator in West Virginia. She served from 1998 to 2002. Later, she ran for election again in 2002 and 2006 but lost to Evan Jenkins.

Marie Redd is married to William Redd, who is a lawyer. They have two children named Lemarquis and D'Ann Redd.
Before she became a state senator in 1998, Marie Redd had other important jobs. She was a professor at Marshall University. There, she taught about criminal justice. She also worked for the IBM Corporation for 18 years.
In 2014, she tried to become a member of the Cabell County Commission but was not elected. In 2020, West Virginia Living Magazine honored her. They named her a "West Virginia Wonder Woman." This award recognized her achievements and contributions.
