Marie's Early Life and Family
Marie's father, King Philip II, had a complicated family life. Before marrying Marie's mother, Agnes, he was married to Ingeborg of Denmark. The Pope, Pope Innocent III, did not approve of Philip's marriage to Agnes. He said it was not valid because Philip was still married to Ingeborg.
Because King Philip did not listen, the Pope put France under an "interdict" in 1199. This meant that many church services and activities were stopped in France. This lasted until September 1200. Later, King Philip needed an alliance with Ingeborg's brother, King Valdemar II of Denmark. So, in 1213, Philip finally accepted Ingeborg as his true Queen. Marie was born during this time of family disagreement. She also had a brother named Philip I, Count of Boulogne.
Marie's Important Marriages
Princess Marie had several important marriage arrangements during her life. These marriages were often arranged for political reasons to help France.
First Betrothal: Prince Alexander of Scotland
When Marie was only two years old, she was promised to Prince Alexander of Scotland. He would later become King Alexander II. However, this engagement was called off around 1202. Alexander became King when he was sixteen in 1214.
Second Betrothal: Arthur I, Duke of Brittany
Marie was also promised to Arthur I, Duke of Brittany in 1202. Arthur was fighting against King John for control of England. Marie's father, King Philip II, supported Arthur's claims to lands in France. However, he still recognized John as the rightful King of England. Marie and Arthur never married because Arthur disappeared and was believed to have died.
First Marriage: Philip I of Namur
In 1211, Marie married Philip I of Namur. This marriage was a smart move by her father, King Philip II. It helped him gain more influence and control over the regions of Flanders and Hainault. Marie and Philip did not have any children. Philip died in 1212, just one year after they were married.
Second Marriage: Henry I, Duke of Brabant
After her first husband died, Marie was able to marry again. On April 22, 1213, she married Henry I, Duke of Brabant in Soissons. This was a second marriage for both Marie and Henry. Henry's first wife, Mathilde of Flanders, had passed away three years earlier.
Marie and Henry had two daughters together:
- Elizabeth (died October 23, 1272). She married Count Dietrich of Cleves in 1233. Later, she married Gerhard II, Count of Wassenberg in 1246.
- Marie, who sadly died when she was very young.
Marie of France passed away on August 15, 1224. She was buried at Affligem Abbey.
