Her Family and Early Years

Marie was one of thirteen children born to Hugh III of Cyprus and Isabella of Ibelin. Her brothers included John II of Jerusalem and Henry II of Jerusalem. Another brother was Amalric, Prince of Tyre.

Marie lived in her brother Amalric's court in 1310. She remained unmarried for many years during her younger life.

A Royal Marriage

In 1315, Marie became engaged to James II of Aragon. King James had already been married twice before. He was also a father to ten children from his previous marriages.

James wanted to marry Marie because she was an heir to the throne of Cyprus. He thought this marriage would help him gain control over Cyprus.

Marie and James first married by proxy on June 15, 1315. This means someone stood in for one of them during the ceremony. This wedding happened at Santa Sophia in Nicosia. They then married in person on November 27, 1315, in Girona.

Marie was 42 years old when she married James. Their marriage was mainly for political reasons. King James hoped to rule Cyprus after Marie's brother Henry died. Marie and James did not have any children together.

Queen of Aragon

Marie and James were married for only four years. Marie died in Tortosa in April 1319. Since Marie died before her brother Henry, King James's plans to rule Cyprus did not work out.

After Marie's death, James said that she had been too old. He also felt she was not a good companion. Marie's brother Henry died five years later. Their nephew Hugh became the new ruler of Cyprus. King James married one last time to Elisenda de Montcada before he died in 1327.
