Marilyn Sachs (born December 18, 1927 – died December 28, 2016) was an American writer. She wrote many popular and award-winning books for children and young adults. Her stories often featured strong characters and explored important topics.

Early Life and School
Marilyn Sachs was born in New York City. She grew up in an area called the Bronx. She loved to read and learn.
She went to Hunter College and earned a bachelor's degree. Later, she studied at Columbia University. There, she earned a master's degree in library science. This means she learned how to organize and manage libraries.
While studying for her master's degree, Sachs worked. She was a children's librarian at the Brooklyn Public Library. She helped kids find exciting books to read.
Becoming a Writer
In 1954, Marilyn Sachs took a break from her library job. She wanted to focus on writing her first novel. This book was called Amy Moves In.
At first, she could not find anyone to publish her book. So, she put it aside for a while. In 1961, she moved to San Francisco, California with her husband and children. She took a new job at the Main Library.
Finally, in 1964, a publisher accepted her book. By 1968, Marilyn Sachs had published four novels. She had earned enough money from her books to quit her library job. She became a full-time writer. She wrote a total of 40 books between 1964 and 2006.
Her Life and Activism
When Marilyn Sachs lived in New York, she was part of a group. It was called American Youth for Democracy. This is where she met her future husband, Morris Sachs. He was a sculptor.
Marilyn Sachs continued to be active in important causes. She worked for public school integration. This meant fighting for all students, no matter their background, to attend the same schools. She also protested against the Vietnam War.
In 1991, she helped edit a book called The Big Book for Peace. The money earned from this book went to groups that work for peace.
Later Years and Death
Marilyn Sachs passed away in San Francisco. She died on December 28, 2016. She was 89 years old.
