Marilyn Shrude was born in Chicago, Illinois. She went to Alverno College and Northwestern University to study music. She learned how to compose from teachers like Alan Stout.
She started and used to lead the Mid-American Center for Contemporary Music. She also helps run the yearly New Music & Art Festival. She has taught music at several universities.
