A Lawyer for the People

After becoming a lawyer, Mario Amaya moved to Trelew. He opened his own law office with Patricio "el Oso" Romero. Romero was another important political leader. Mario Amaya often helped workers and their unions with legal advice.

In the early 1970s, he started defending political prisoners. These prisoners were held in the Rawson prison. One famous person he defended was the union leader Agustín Tosco.

In 1972, some political prisoners tried to escape from prison. A large group of them were stopped at the Trelew airport. They asked for lawyers Mario Amaya and Hipólito Solari Yrigoyen to be there as a guarantee for their safety. Sadly, a few days later, many of these prisoners died in an event known as the Trelew Massacre. Soon after, Mario Amaya was arrested by the government at that time.
