Mario Casas Sierra (born 12 June 1986) is a famous Spanish actor who has starred in many movies and TV shows. He is well-known for his exciting roles in Spanish cinema and on Spanish television. Mario has won several important awards, including a Goya Award, a Gaudí Award, and three Feroz Awards.
He started his acting journey in 2005. After appearing in a few smaller TV roles, Mario got his first main part in the teen drama SMS: Sin Miedo a Soñar in 2006. That same year, he also made his big screen debut in the movie Summer Rain. Mario became even more popular when he joined the TV series Los hombres de Paco. He was part of a popular storyline that made him a household name in Spain.
His early movie career took off with hit films like Brain Drain (2009) and Three Steps Above Heaven (2010). His role as the "bad boy" Hache in Three Steps Above Heaven made him very popular across Spain. He also starred in the TV series El barco from 2011 to 2013.
Mario has continued to star in many successful films. These include Unit 7 (2012), I Want You (2012, which was a sequel to Three Steps Above Heaven), The Mule (2013), and Ismael (2013). Later, he appeared in My Big Night (2015), Palm Trees in the Snow (2015), Toro (2016), and the mystery thriller The Invisible Guest (2016). He also starred in The Bar (2017), The Skin of the Wolf (2017), The Photographer of Mauthausen (2018), Bye (2019), The Occupant (2020), and The Paramedic (2020).
He has also worked on international films in English, such as Eden and The 33. In 2020, Mario's amazing performance in the movie Cross the Line earned him his first Goya Award for Best Actor. This is one of the most important film awards in Spain. In 2023, he also made his first movie as a director, called Caged Wings.
Early Life and Education
Mario Casas was born in A Coruña, a city in Spain. When he was 4 years old, his family moved to Barcelona. Mario later decided he wanted to be an actor. He studied acting at the Cristina Rota School of Dramatic Arts. This is a well-known school for actors.
Acting Career
Starting Out (2005–2010)
Mario Casas began his acting career in 2005 when he was 19. He first appeared in TV shows like Obsesión, Motivos personales, and Mujeres. He gained more attention in Spain with his first movie role in 2006. This was in El camino de los ingleses, which was directed by the famous actor Antonio Banderas.
In the same year, he joined the cast of the TV series SMS. Mario then became known to a wider audience as Aitor Carrasco in the TV series Los hombres de Paco. He starred in this show from 2007 to 2010.
In 2009, Mario starred in two very popular movies. These were Fuga de cerebros (Brain Drain) with Amaia Salamanca, and Mentiras y Gordas (..., Party and Lies). Both of these movies were big hits at the box office when they were released. In 2010, Mario also appeared in Carne de neón (Neon Flesh). Later that year, he starred in Tres metros sobre el cielo (Three Steps Above Heaven) with María Valverde. This movie became the highest-grossing Spanish film of that year. A sequel, Tengo ganas de ti (I Want You), came out in 2012, with Mario, María Valverde, and Clara Lago.
Growing Success (2011–Present)
Since 2011, Mario Casas has starred in the TV series El barco (The Boat). He also continued his movie career with Tengo ganas de ti (I Want You), which was released in 2012.
In 2013 and 2014, Mario traveled to Colombia and Chile for his second English-language film, Los 33 (The 33). In this movie, he worked with Antonio Banderas and Juliette Binoche. The film tells the true story of the Chilean mining accident that happened in 2010. In 2015, Mario starred in two more films: the comedy My Great Night and the romantic drama Palm Trees in the Snow. For Palm Trees in the Snow, he worked again with the director of Three Steps Above Heaven and I Want You, Fernando Gonzalez Molina.
In 2016, he acted in the mystery thriller The Invisible Guest. This movie was a big success and earned a lot of money in Spain and China. In 2018, Mario starred in The Photographer of Mauthausen. This film tells the true story of Francisco Boix, a Spanish photographer who was held in a concentration camp during World War II. To play this role, Mario lost about 12 kilograms (26 pounds) to show how difficult life was for his character.
In October 2022, Mario Casas started directing his first full-length movie, My Loneliness Has Wings. He wrote the movie with Deborah François, and his brother Óscar stars in it.
Personal Life
Mario Casas has a younger brother named Óscar Casas, who is also an actor. Sometimes, Óscar has played younger versions of Mario's characters in movies and TV shows.
