Mario's Football Journey
Mario Fernández was born in Santander, a city in Cantabria, Spain. He started playing football at a young age. He joined the youth team of Racing de Santander in 1996 when he was just eight years old. He spent ten years learning and growing as a player in their youth system.
Starting with Racing Santander
After playing in the youth teams, Mario moved up to Racing Santander's main team for the 2009–10 season. He was a backup goalkeeper, which means he was ready to play if the main goalkeepers couldn't. He also played for Racing's reserve team, Racing B, in a league called Segunda División B.
Mario made his first official game for Racing's main team on January 6, 2010. This was in a cup competition called the Copa del Rey. Racing won that game 3–2. He played a few more times in the cup as his team reached the semi-finals.
Later, on May 15, 2011, Mario played his first game in La Liga, which is Spain's top football league. He played very well in that game, even though his team lost 2–1. He was even named the best player of the match! He continued to play for Racing Santander until 2015. During his time there, he played 91 games for the main team.
Moving to Osasuna
On August 4, 2015, Mario signed a two-year contract with CA Osasuna. This team played in the Segunda División, which is the second-highest league in Spain. At Osasuna, he was mostly a backup goalkeeper. He left the club in 2017 when his contract ended. He played 7 league games for Osasuna.
Time at Rayo Vallecano
In August 2017, Mario joined Rayo Vallecano, another team in the second division. He signed a one-year contract with them. He didn't play many games for Rayo Vallecano, only two in total. However, his team had a great season and became champions of the Segunda División! This meant they moved up to La Liga, the top league.
Playing for Cartagena and Other Clubs
After his time at Rayo Vallecano, Mario returned to the third division. In the summer of 2018, he signed with FC Cartagena. He played 11 games for them.
After Cartagena, Mario continued his career by playing for other teams. He joined Unionistas in 2020, where he played 8 games. Then, he moved to Pontevedra in 2020 and played 15 games until 2021. From 2021 to 2024, he played for Tropezón, where he made 80 appearances.
Since 2024, Mario has been playing for Monte. He continues to be a dedicated goalkeeper.
