Mario Maya (born in 1937 – died September 27, 2008) was a very important and creative flamenco dancer from Spain. He was born in Córdoba into a Romani family. He grew up in a famous area called Sacromonte in Granada. Mario Maya became known for his amazing dance moves and for bringing new ideas to flamenco.

Mario Maya's Life and Career

Mario Maya started his own dance school in Seville in 1983. This was a big step for him. Ten years later, in 1993, he started his own dance group called ‘Flamenco Mario Maya’. They performed at the Alcalá Palace Theatre in Madrid, showing off their incredible talent.

From 1994 to 1997, Mario Maya was the director of the Andalusian Dance Company. This company is part of the Andalusian Dance Centre, which is a very important place for dance in Spain. He also appeared in a famous movie about flamenco called Flamenco (film 1995), directed by Carlos Saura.

Mario Maya created many important dance shows. Some of his most famous works include Ceremonial (1974), Camelamos Naquerar (1976), ¡Ay Jondo! (1977), El Amargo (1986), El Amor Brujo (1987), and Réquiem (1994). These shows helped to make flamenco even more popular and exciting.

Mario Maya passed away in Seville on September 27, 2008. He left behind a wonderful legacy in the world of flamenco dance.
