Where is Marion Located?
Marion is situated along U.S. Route 11, a major road in Pennsylvania. It's about 6 miles south of Chambersburg and 5 miles north of Greencastle.
A big highway, Interstate 81, runs along the eastern side of Marion. You can easily get to Marion from Exit 10 on I-81, which connects to Pennsylvania Route 914. This highway can take you northeast about 37 miles to Carlisle or south about 17 miles to Hagerstown, Maryland.
The History of Marion's Name
Marion has an interesting past! It was first settled around 1810 and was originally called Independence. Later, in 1833, a post office opened in the community and was named Marion.
The name "Marion" was chosen to honor Francis Marion. He was a brave army officer during the American Revolutionary War. Francis Marion was famous for his clever tactics and was often called the "Swamp Fox."
