Where is Marion Located?
Marion is a small farming community. It is about 40 miles east of Salt Lake City. It is also 18 miles east of Park City. Marion is in the upper Kamas Valley. This area is part of the Wasatch Back region of Utah.

Marion is located just 2 miles north of Kamas. It has always been closely connected to Kamas. About 3 miles north of Marion, across the Weber River, is the city of Oakley.
A Look at Marion's History
The land where Marion is now was used for ranching in the 1860s. A rancher named Samuel P. Hoyt had many cattle here. His 600 to 700 cows grazed over most of the land.
How Marion Started
The community of Marion began in the mid-1870s. It was first called "Morrell." This name came from William Morrell, who built the very first house there. Many of the first people who settled in Marion were immigrants from Denmark. Because of this, the community was also often called "Denmark."
Where Did the Name "Marion" Come From?
The name Marion has two possible origins. One idea is that it was named after Francis Marion Lyman. He was an important leader in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He helped organize the first local church group in the area in 1909.
Another idea is that the town was named after Marion Myrick Sorensen. She moved to the area with her first husband in 1882. The name Marion first appeared in official records in the 1900 census.

Marion gained attention in 1979 due to an event involving a local resident. In 1988, another event occurred. A relative of the 1979 resident was involved in an incident. This led to a 13-day situation with law enforcement.
