About Marion Deuchars
Early Life and Education
Marion Deuchars was born in Falkirk, Scotland. She loved art from a young age. She went to the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art from 1983 to 1987. There, she earned a top degree in illustration. Later, she studied at the Royal College of Art in London. She finished her studies in 1989 with high honors.
Her Special Art Style
Marion Deuchars is well-known for her special way of using hand lettering. This means she draws the words herself instead of using computer fonts. She first used this style in a big report in 2002. For that report, she wrote all 5,496 words by hand with a pencil!
Her unique hand-drawn letters have been used in many cool places. For example, she designed stamps for the Royal Mail. These stamps celebrated 50 years of the Royal Shakespeare Company. She also created art for Jamie Oliver's cookbooks. Her art has even appeared in the windows of Cass Art shops.
Working with Big Brands
Marion has worked with many famous companies. She drew pictures for the Guardian newspaper every Saturday for two years. She also designed over 100 book covers for a Spanish publisher called Editorial Losada. Her cover for George Orwell's book Burmese Days even won an award in 2010.
Awards and Recognition
Marion Deuchars has won many awards for her amazing work. In 2012, she was chosen to represent Britain at the World Design Capital event in Helsinki. She has won Gold and Silver awards from the Art Directors Club in New York. She also has three D&AD yellow pencils, which are big awards in design. In 2018, she became a Royal Designer for Industry. This is a very special honor for designers in the UK.
Books for Kids
Marion Deuchars is also a successful author. She has written several popular books. Her first picture book for children is called Bob the Artist. She is also famous for her award-winning art activity books. These include Let’s Make Some Great Art and Let’s Make Great Fingerprint Art. These books help kids learn about art in a fun, hands-on way. All her children's books are published by Laurence King Publishing.
