The Marion Veterans Affairs Medical Center, also known as the Marion Veterans Administration Hospital, is a special hospital located in Marion, Illinois. It is part of the Veterans Health Administration, which means it provides healthcare for U.S. military veterans. These are people who have served in the country's armed forces. This hospital helps veterans living in Southern Illinois and nearby states get the medical care they need.

A Hospital for Heroes

This important hospital was built between 1939 and 1941. People in Southern Illinois worked hard to get a hospital specifically for veterans in their area. It was part of a group of new VA hospitals built across the United States from the 1920s to the 1950s. These hospitals were created to support the health and well-being of those who served our country.

Unique Design: Egyptian Revival

The Marion VA Hospital stands out because of its unique design. It is the only VA hospital from that time period built in the Egyptian Revival style. This style was chosen to honor the region's nickname, "Little Egypt."

The architects used several features to make the building look like ancient Egyptian structures. These include:

  • A roof shaped like a pyramid.
  • A part of the building that sticks out, called a projecting pavilion.
  • Smooth outer walls decorated with different colors.

A Place of History

Because of its special design and its role in caring for veterans, the Marion Veterans Administration Hospital was added to the National Register of Historic Places on January 9, 2013. This means it is recognized as an important historical site. It is officially known as the Marion Veterans Administration Hospital Historic District.
