In 2016, it was found that some of Mariya's past competition results had issues. This happened after old tests from the 2008 Olympic Games were checked again. Because of these rule violations, Mariya's results from the 2008 Olympics were cancelled. This meant she had to return the medal she had won. She tried to appeal this decision, but the ruling was upheld. This also affected some of her other results, including her medals from the 2009 and 2011 World Championships, which were also cancelled.
