Mariya competed in the Olympic Games twice. She was at the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics. In 2008, she first won a silver medal. In 2012, she first finished tenth. She also first won a gold medal at the 2011 World Championships.

Challenges and Changes
In 2016, news came out about some athletes, including Mariya, having issues with past drug tests. These tests were from the 2008 Olympic Games. This happened because of a larger situation involving sports in Russia.
After more checks, it was confirmed that some of Mariya's results were not valid. This meant she had to give back the medal she won in 2008. Her results from other competitions between 2008 and 2012 were also changed. Mariya tried to appeal this decision, but the sports court upheld the original ruling.
Mariya's Family Life
Mariya Abakumova is married to another Russian javelin thrower, Dmitry Tarabin. In June 2014, Mariya and Dmitry welcomed twins. Their daughters are named Kira and Milana.
