Mark Alan Hershkovitz is an American scientist who studies living things. He is a biochemist, which means he studies the chemical processes happening inside living organisms. He is also a taxonomist, someone who names and classifies plants and animals.
Mark Hershkovitz's Education and Career
Mark Hershkovitz started his science journey by earning his first degree, a Bachelor of Science, from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign in 1981. He then continued his studies at the University of California, Davis. There, he earned his Master of Science degree in 1986 and his PhD in 1990. His main focus during his PhD was botany, which is the study of plants.
After finishing his studies, Dr. Hershkovitz worked as a postdoctoral scientist at the Laboratory of Molecular Systematics. This lab is part of the famous Smithsonian Institution. Around 1996, he joined the National Center for Biotechnology Information. He worked there as a fellow, which means he received a special award to do research.
As of 2025, Dr. Hershkovitz is doing his own independent research. He is currently working in Chile, a country in South America.
