Mark Allen Montgomery (born April 1, 1970) is an American college basketball head coach. He currently leads the Detroit Mercy Titans team. Before this, he was the head coach at Northern Illinois University. Coach Montgomery also spent many years as an assistant coach at Michigan State. There, he worked with the famous coach Tom Izzo.

Playing Basketball
Mark Montgomery was a talented basketball player himself. He played for Michigan State from 1988 to 1992. He was a team captain during his time there. He even held the school record for the most games played at Michigan State (126 games).
College Achievements
In 1992, he was chosen for the All-Big Ten Third Team. He is still one of the top players in Michigan State history for assists and steals. He helped his team win the Big Ten Championship in 1990. After college, he played professional basketball in Europe for four years. He averaged more than 25 points per game during his professional career.

Mark Montgomery has had a long and successful career as a basketball coach.
Starting as an Assistant Coach
Montgomery began his coaching journey as an assistant coach at Central Michigan. He joined their staff in 1997. While there, he helped the team win a MAC conference championship in 2001.
Returning to Michigan State
In 2001, Montgomery went back to his old school, Michigan State. He became an assistant coach under Tom Izzo. In 2007, he was promoted to associate head coach. This meant he was a very important part of the coaching staff.
During his 10 seasons as an assistant at Michigan State, the team was very successful. They reached the NCAA tournament every year. They also made it to the Final Four three times (in 2005, 2009, and 2010). In 2009, they even played in the National Championship game.
Becoming a Head Coach
On March 24, 2011, Mark Montgomery became the head coach for the Northern Illinois Huskies. This was a big step in his career. The Northern Illinois program had faced some challenges before he arrived. He coached the team until January 2021.
Back to Michigan State (Again!)
In June 2021, Montgomery returned to Michigan State once more. This time, he took on a new role as the recruiting coordinator. This job involved finding and bringing new talented players to the team. He also served as an assistant coach again until 2024.
Coaching the Detroit Mercy Titans
In 2024, Mark Montgomery became the head coach for the Detroit Mercy Titans. He continues to lead the team today. His overall coaching record shows he has won 132 games and lost 194 games.
