Mark Allen Montgomery, born on April 1, 1970, is a well-known American college basketball coach. He is currently the head coach for the Detroit Mercy Titans men's basketball team. Before this, he was the head coach at Northern Illinois University.
Montgomery took over the Northern Illinois Huskies team in 2011. He had spent 10 seasons as an assistant coach at Michigan State, working under famous coach Tom Izzo. During his time at Michigan State, the team went to the NCAA tournament every year. They even reached the Final Four three times and played in the championship game in 2009.

Playing Career
Mark Montgomery was a talented basketball player in college. He played for Michigan State from 1988 to 1992. He was a four-year letter winner, meaning he played well enough to earn a special award each year. He was also a team captain.
When he finished college, he held the school record for most games played at Michigan State (126 games). In 1992, he was chosen for the All-Big Ten Third Team. He is still one of Michigan State's top players for assists and steals. He helped his team win the Big Ten Championship in 1990. After college, he played professional basketball in Europe for four years. He averaged more than 25 points per game during his professional career.

Assistant Coach at Central Michigan
Montgomery started his coaching journey in 1997. He became an assistant coach at Central Michigan. He worked there for four years. In 2001, he helped the team win the MAC conference championship.
Assistant Coach at Michigan State
In 2001, Montgomery returned to his old college, Michigan State. He became an assistant coach there. In 2007, he was promoted to associate head coach. This meant he was a very important part of the coaching staff.
During his 10 seasons at Michigan State, he helped the team reach the Final Four three times. These were in 2005, 2009, and 2010. In 2009, they even played in the National Championship game.
Head Coach at Northern Illinois
On March 24, 2011, Mark Montgomery became the head coach for the Northern Illinois Huskies. The team had been struggling before he arrived. He worked hard to improve the program. He coached the Huskies until January 3, 2021.
Back to Michigan State and Detroit Mercy
After leaving Northern Illinois, Montgomery returned to Michigan State in June 2021. He became the recruiting coordinator for his old team. This job involved finding new talented players for Michigan State. Later, he also served as an assistant coach again. In 2024, he became the head coach for the Detroit Mercy Titans.
