Mark Pickerel, born on March 12, 1968, is an American musician. He is most famous for being the first drummer for the rock band Screaming Trees. Mark also plays music with many other artists and has released his own albums where he sings and plays guitar.

Mark Pickerel's Early Life and Bands

Mark Pickerel grew up in Ellensburg, Washington. In high school, he met Van Conner and Gary Lee Conner. The three friends started a band called Explosive Generation. Mark played drums and sang in this early band.

A few years later, in 1985, they formed a new band called Screaming Trees. This time, Mark Lanegan joined as the main singer, and Mark Pickerel focused on playing the drums. The band soon moved to Seattle. Seattle was a big music city at the time, known for its "grunge" music scene. Grunge was a type of rock music that became very popular in the 1990s.

While in Seattle, Mark also played drums for other bands. He helped record songs that later appeared on albums by famous artists like Mark Lanegan and even Nirvana.

Mark's Journey with Screaming Trees and Beyond

Mark Pickerel played drums on five studio albums with Screaming Trees. These albums helped the band become well-known. However, in 1991, Mark left the band before they recorded their very successful album, Sweet Oblivion. Another drummer, Barrett Martin, took his place.

After leaving Screaming Trees, Mark started a new band called Truly. He formed this band with Hiro Yamamoto, who used to play bass for Soundgarden, and singer/guitarist Robert Roth. Truly released two studio albums before they stopped playing together in 1997.

Mark then decided to switch instruments. In 1997, he started playing guitar and singing for his next band, The Dark Fantastic. This band released two albums. During these years, Mark also played music for many other artists. He appeared on albums by musicians like Neko Case and Jim Carroll.

In 2004, Mark Pickerel started a new music project called Mark Pickerel and His Praying Hands. He sang and wrote songs for this group. Their 2006 album, Snake in the Radio, was well-liked. It mixed different styles of music, including rock and American folk music. The latest album from Mark Pickerel and His Praying Hands, called Rebel in the Rearview, came out in 2021.

Besides making music, Mark Pickerel has also owned and managed record stores. Today, he runs a store called RoadTrip Records in his hometown of Ellensburg.
