Mark Pickerel, born on March 12, 1968, is an American musician. He is most famous for being the first drummer for the rock band Screaming Trees. Mark also plays music for other artists and has released his own albums where he sings and plays guitar.

Mark Pickerel's Early Life and Music

Mark Pickerel grew up in Ellensburg, Washington. In high school, he met Van Conner and Gary Lee Conner. They started a band called Explosive Generation. Mark played drums and sang in this early group.

A few years later, in 1985, Mark and the Conner brothers formed Screaming Trees with singer Mark Lanegan. Mark Pickerel focused on playing drums in this new band. The band soon moved to Seattle. Seattle was a big music hub at the time, known for its "grunge" sound. Grunge music was a type of rock that became very popular.

Playing with Other Bands

While with Screaming Trees, Mark also played drums for other bands in Seattle. Some of these recordings later appeared on Mark Lanegan's solo album, The Winding Sheet. He also played on some songs that were released on the Nirvana collection called With the Lights Out.

Mark played on five studio albums with Screaming Trees. However, he left the band in 1991. This was just before they started recording their very successful album, Sweet Oblivion. Barrett Martin took his place as the drummer.

New Bands and Solo Work

After leaving Screaming Trees, Mark Pickerel formed a new band called Truly. He joined with Soundgarden bassist Hiro Yamamoto and singer/guitarist Robert Roth. Truly released two studio albums before they stopped playing together in 1997.

Next, Mark switched to playing guitar and singing. He started a band called The Dark Fantastic in 1997. This band released two albums before they broke up in 2001. During these years, Mark also played music for many other artists. He worked with musicians like Neko Case and Jim Carroll.

In 2004, Mark Pickerel started his own music project called Mark Pickerel and His Praying Hands. Their 2006 album, Snake in the Radio, was well-liked. It mixed different styles of music, including indie rock and Americana. The most recent album by Mark Pickerel and His Praying Hands, Rebel in the Rearview, was released in 2021.

Besides making music, Mark Pickerel has also owned and managed record stores. Today, he runs RoadTrip Records in Ellensburg.
