Mark Warren (born September 24, 1938 – died January 11, 1999) was an American director. He directed shows for television and also movies. In 1971, he made history. He became the first African American to win an Emmy Award for directing. He won this award for directing an episode of the popular show Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In. That episode featured the famous actor Orson Welles.

Mark Warren's Directing Career

Mark Warren started his career in the early 1960s. He worked at the Canadian Broadcasting Company. There, he became a producer and director. He was in charge of many different variety programs.

By the late 1960s, Mark Warren was working in American television. He directed episodes for many popular TV series. These shows were big hits in the 1970s and 1980s. Some of the shows he directed include:

  • Sanford and Son
  • What's Happening!!
  • Barney Miller
  • The Dukes of Hazard

He also directed a full-length movie. This film was called Come Back, Charleston Blue. It came out in 1972.

His Final Years

Mark Warren passed away on January 11, 1999. He died from cancer. He was at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.
