A Look Back: The Church's History
Early Days of Methodism in Market Drayton
The first Methodists in Market Drayton started meeting a long time ago in 1799. They held their gatherings in people's homes. These early meeting spots were in areas then known as Tinkers Lane and Ranters Gullet. A church leader visiting at that time noted that many people in the area were "church-going Methodists."
Building the First Chapels
In 1807, the first Methodist Chapel was built. It was located on land between what are now Salisbury Road and Shrewsbury Road. Ten years later, in 1817, the chapel was made bigger. More seating was added in 1842 by building a gallery inside. This first building was used for many things over 172 years. It served as a chapel, a Sunday school, and even a day-school.
The Grand New Chapel of 1866
A much larger and more decorative chapel was built in 1866. This new building was located across the road from the first one. Important foundation stones were laid on August 25, 1864. The construction was finished, and the new chapel opened in 1866. It had its own grounds with a beautiful cedar tree and a lawn at the front.
Changes and Modern Updates
One major change happened in 1888. A new two-story building replaced the original single-story vestry. Later, in 1974, this two-story block was taken down. This made space for a brand new section. This new part included an entrance porch, a foyer, a classroom (which also served as the minister's office), a kitchen, a lounge, and a large hall. In 1975, the Sunday School and the Church officially joined together on this one site.
A New Beginning: The Current Church Building
On November 25, 1981, a very strong wind caused serious damage to the 1866 church building. The damage was so bad that it could not be repaired. Because of this, the building had to be taken down in 1982.
The current church building was then constructed. It officially opened its doors on September 28, 1985. This opening was a special event because it also brought together two different Methodist groups. The "Primitive" congregation and the "Wesleyan" congregation became one group. This allowed the Primitive Methodist property on Frogmore Road to be sold.
Today, the church building has a modern design. It is split into two levels inside, offering a welcoming space for everyone.
