History of the Church
Early Methodist Meetings
The first Methodists in Market Drayton started holding their meetings in private homes around 1799. These early gatherings took place in areas then known as Tinkers Lane and Ranters Gullet. A church leader visiting at the time noted that "many church-going Methodists" were in the area. He thought there were probably hundreds of them.
The First Chapel
In 1807, a Wesleyan Methodist Chapel was built. It was located on land between what are now Salisbury Road and Shrewsbury Road. Ten years later, in 1817, the chapel was made larger. More seating was added in 1842 by building a gallery inside. This first building was used for many things over 172 years. It served as a chapel, a Sunday school, and even a day-school. It continued to be used for Sunday school even after a new chapel was built nearby.
The Second Chapel
A new, more detailed chapel was built in 1866. It was much more decorative than the first one. Construction began when special memorial stones were laid on 25 August 1864. The building was finished and opened in 1866. This chapel was set back from the road in its own grounds. A large cedar tree stood proudly in the front lawn area.
Changes to the Second Chapel
One major change was made to the 1866 chapel in 1888. A two-story building replaced the original single-story vestry. Later, in 1974, this two-story section was taken down. This made space for a brand new building. The new part included an entrance porch, a foyer, a classroom, a kitchen, a lounge, and a large hall. In 1975, the Sunday School and the Church joined together on this one site. This happened when a new annex was opened.
The Current Church Building
On Monday, 25 November 1981, a very strong wind caused serious damage to the church. The building was so badly damaged that it could not be repaired. Because of this, the church building was taken down in 1982. The current church building opened on 28 September 1985. This opening also marked a special event. The Primitive Methodist group and the Wesleyan Methodist group joined together. This allowed the Primitive Methodist property on Frogmore Road to be sold.
Today, the church building has a modern design. It is split into two levels inside.
