History of Markleeville
Markleeville began in 1861 when a man named Jacob J. Marklee built a toll bridge over the Carson River. A toll bridge is one where you pay a fee to cross. He hoped to make money from people traveling to the silver mining areas nearby.
In 1862, Marklee claimed 160 acres of land. At first, he thought it was in Nevada, but a survey showed it was actually in California. Sadly, Marklee died in a gunfight in 1863.
After the discovery of the Comstock Lode (a huge silver discovery), the town of Markleeville was officially founded on Marklee's land. Today, the Alpine County Courthouse stands on this historic spot. It is recognized as a California Historical Landmark. The town also got its own post office in 1863.
