Marko Orlandić was an important politician from Montenegro, a country that was once part of Yugoslavia. He was born on September 28, 1930, in Seoca, which is now in Montenegro. He passed away on December 20, 2019, at the age of 89. During the 1970s and 1980s, he held many high-ranking positions in the Yugoslav government.

Early Government Roles

Marko Orlandić began his career in the government of Yugoslavia. For two terms, from 1969 to 1971 and again from 1971 to 1974, he was a member of the Federal Executive Council. This was a top group that helped run the country's government.

Leading Montenegro's Government

After his time in the federal government, Orlandić returned to Montenegro. From May 1974 to May 1978, he served as the President of the Executive Council of the Socialist Republic of Montenegro. This role was similar to being the prime minister or head of government for Montenegro.

A Diplomat's Important Role

From 1978 to 1982, Marko Orlandić took on a different kind of role. He became the Ambassador for Yugoslavia in the Soviet Union (USSR). An ambassador is a country's main representative in another country, helping to manage relationships between them.

Top Leadership Positions

Marko Orlandić continued to rise in the political ranks. From May 1983 to May 1984, he served as the President of the Presidency of Montenegro. This was a very high leadership position within Montenegro.

Leading the Communist Party

From July 1984 to April 1986, he held another key role. He was the President of the Presidency of the Central Committee of the League of Communists of Montenegro. This meant he was a top leader of the main political party in Montenegro. During this time, he was also a member of the Presidency of the Central Committee of the League of Communists of Yugoslavia (LCY), which was the highest leadership body for the entire country's main political party.

In 1986, he was re-elected to the Presidency of the LCY. He stayed in this important position until he resigned on February 1, 1989. His resignation happened after a series of large public demonstrations and protests in Montenegro. These protests, which took place in late 1988 and early 1989, were influenced by the Serbian leader Slobodan Milošević. The protests led to many leaders in Montenegro's government and party stepping down from their roles.

Supporting Montenegro's Independence

After the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia eventually broke apart, a new, smaller Yugoslavia was formed. This new country included only Serbia and Montenegro. However, Marko Orlandić strongly believed that Montenegro should be a completely independent country. He actively supported this idea.

His Written Works

Marko Orlandić also wrote three books in the Serbo-Croatian language. These books shared his thoughts and experiences. Their titles were U Vrtlogu (published in 1997), U Predvecerje Sloma (published in 2002), and Crnogorsko Posrtanje (published in 2005).
