Playing in Austria
Schopp played for Sturm Graz and Red Bull Salzburg. With Sturm Graz, he helped the team win the Austrian Bundesliga title in the 1998–99 season. This was a big achievement for the club.
Playing Abroad
He also played for teams outside of Austria. He had a time with Hamburger SV in Germany. Later, he moved to Italy to play for Brescia. There, he played alongside famous footballers like Roberto Baggio and Pep Guardiola.
Retirement from Playing
Markus Schopp stopped playing football in December 2007. He had to retire because of ongoing back problems. His last team was the New York Red Bulls in the Major League Soccer in the United States, where he played on loan.

Early Coaching Roles
He started his coaching career in the youth system of Red Bull Salzburg. In April 2013, he became the temporary head coach for his old club, Sturm Graz, until the end of that season.
Success with TSV Hartberg
In 2018, Schopp took over as manager of TSV Hartberg in the Austrian Bundesliga. He led the club to their best-ever finish in the 2019–20 season. This amazing achievement meant that Hartberg qualified for the UEFA Europa League for the very first time in their history. He also guided them to a seventh-place finish in the 2020–21 season. During his time at Sturm Graz and Hartberg, Schopp became known for helping young, talented players improve and grow.
Time at Barnsley
On June 29, 2021, Schopp was appointed head coach of Barnsley, a club in the EFL Championship in England. He signed a three-year contract. However, after a difficult period with 13 games without a win and seven straight league defeats, Barnsley decided to let him go on November 1, 2021.
Return to Hartberg and LASK
After his time in England, Schopp returned to manage TSV Hartberg in December 2022. He stayed there until September 2024, when he moved to become the manager of LASK.
Personal Life
Markus Schopp has a family connection in football. He is the uncle of another footballer named Christoph Urdl. Christoph Urdl actually played under Markus Schopp when he was managing Hartberg.
