TSV Hartberg was founded on April 29, 1946. For many years, the club played in lower leagues in Styria. In 1978, with help from a sponsor, they moved up to the Styrian Landesliga.

Cup Competitions

In the 1980s, Hartberg became known as a strong team in cup competitions. They often beat teams from higher divisions. In the 1986–87 Austrian Cup, they reached the round of 16. They famously defeated Wiener Sport-Club, a team that included Hans Krankl. Krankl was a very famous Austrian footballer who had won the European Golden Shoe.

Hartberg had their best cup run in 1988–89. They made it to the quarter-finals of the Austrian Cup. At that time, they were a fourth-tier team. They won against top-flight club SK Austria Klagenfurt and second-tier SV Spittal/Drau. They were finally knocked out by SV Austria Salzburg after a 3–3 draw, losing in a penalty shootout.

In the 1994–95 season, Hartberg reached the Austrian Cup semi-finals. They beat three clubs from higher divisions. They lost 1–0 to DSV Leoben in that semi-final match.

Promotions and Relegations

Hartberg won the Landesliga for the first time in 1987–88. However, they did not get promoted after losing in the playoffs. They won the Landesliga again in 1989–90 but again missed out on promotion.

In 1994–95, they won the Landesliga for a third time. This time, they were promoted to the Regionalliga Mitte, which is the third tier. The very next season, 1995–96, Hartberg won the Regionalliga Mitte. This meant they moved up to the Second Division.

They were relegated in 1997–98 due to changes in the league structure. In 1998–99, Hartberg won the Regionalliga Mitte again. But they lost a playoff and could not return to the second tier.

In 2005–06, the club won their third Regionalliga Mitte title. This earned them promotion to the Second Division again. They were relegated after just one season. They returned to the Regionalliga Mitte for the 2007–08 season.

In 2008–09, Hartberg won the Regionalliga Ost title. This led to another promotion to the Austrian Second Division. In 2010–11, they finished last but avoided relegation by winning a play-off. However, in 2014–15, they finished last again and were relegated to the third tier.

TSV Hartberg was promoted to the Second Division after winning the 2016–17 Regionalliga Mitte. In the 2017–18 Second Division season, Hartberg finished second. This amazing result meant they were promoted to the Austrian Bundesliga for the first time ever!

In the 2019–20 season, Hartberg finished fifth in the Austrian Bundesliga. This allowed them to play in the 2020–21 UEFA Europa League qualifying phase. They were knocked out in the second qualifying round by Polish team Piast Gliwice.
