FC Bayern Munich II is the reserve team of the famous German football club, FC Bayern Munich. Think of them as the younger, developing squad for the main team. They are currently playing in the Regionalliga Bayern, which is a high level of German football.

This team helps young, promising players get ready for professional football. They often play in the third or fourth best leagues in Germany. In 2004, they won the Regionalliga Süd title. They also won the 3. Liga in 2019–20. This team is a key step for players hoping to join the main Bayern Munich squad!

About Bayern Munich II

This team is like a stepping stone for young players. It helps them move from Bayern's youth teams to the main professional team. Most players are between 18 and 23 years old. Some experienced players also join to help guide the younger ones.

Bayern II has even played in the DFB-Pokal, which is a big German cup competition. Once, in 1977, they even played against the main Bayern Munich team! They lost that game 5–3.

A Look Back: History of Bayern II

The team first played in Bavaria's top league in 1956. This was called the Amateurliga Bayern. They quickly showed their talent, finishing second in 1957–58 and again in 1960–61.

In 1963, German football leagues changed. Bayern II had to play in a new, lower league called the Landesliga Bayern-Süd. They worked hard and won this league in 1966–67. This win moved them back up to the Bayernliga.

For 21 years, the team stayed in the Bayernliga. They were usually one of the top teams. However, they couldn't get promoted to professional football from this league. They finished second three times: in 1983, 1984, and 1987.

In 1994, a new third-tier league, the Regionalliga Süd, was created. Bayern II easily joined this league. They stayed there until 2008. In 2004, they won the Regionalliga title! Since reserve teams can't play in the second highest league, they stayed in the Regionalliga. In 2005, their name changed from Bayern Amateure to FC Bayern Munich II.

In 2008, the team moved up to the new 3. Liga. They played there for three seasons. In 2010–11, they finished last and moved down to the Regionalliga. This was the first time since 1973 they weren't in the third division.

In 2014, they won the Regionalliga Bayern title. They played a special game to try and get promoted to the 3. Liga. But they lost to Fortuna Köln.

In 2019, Bayern Munich II won the Regionalliga again. They then beat Wolfsburg II in a playoff to get promoted to the 3. Liga. The next season, in 2019–20, they actually won the 3. Liga! But again, reserve teams can't move up to the 2. Bundesliga. So, they stayed in the 3. Liga. In the 2020–21 season, they finished 18th and were moved back down to the Regionalliga Bayern.

Where They Play: The Grünwalder Stadion

Bayern II plays their home games at the Grünwalder Stadion. This stadium was once the home ground for the main Bayern Munich team. That was before the Olympiastadion opened in 1972.

Sometimes, the stadium needs repairs. For example, in the 2012–13 season, Bayern II played at the Sportpark Heimstetten.
