FC Bayern Munich II is the reserve team for the famous German football club FC Bayern Munich. Think of them as the "junior varsity" team for professional football. Until 2005, they were known as FC Bayern Munich Amateure.

This team currently plays in the Regionalliga Bayern, which is one of the top amateur leagues in German football. They have often played at the third level of German football, which is the highest level allowed for reserve teams.

About the Team

This team helps young, talented players get ready for the main first team. Most players are between 18 and 23 years old. Some experienced players also join to help guide the younger ones.

Bayern II has even played in the DFB-Pokal, which is a big German cup competition. In 1977, they played against the senior Bayern team in a cup match, losing 5–3.

Team History

The team first played in Bavaria's top amateur league in 1956. They won a lower league, the 2nd Amateurliga Oberbayern A, to get there. In 1957–58 and 1960–61, they finished second in the league.

In 1963, the German football league system changed a lot. Bayern II did not qualify for the new top amateur league. They had to play in a lower league called the Landesliga Bayern-Süd.

It took them four seasons to get back to the Bayernliga. They won the Landesliga Bayern-Süd in 1966–67 and were promoted. They were relegated again in 1971 but returned to the third division in 1973 by winning their league once more.

For the next 21 years, the team stayed in the Bayernliga. They could not be promoted to professional football from this league. They finished second three times, in 1983, 1984, and 1987.

In 1994, a new third-tier league, the Regionalliga Süd, was created. Bayern II easily qualified for it. They won this league in 2004, which was their first league title in over 30 years. Since they were a reserve team, they could not move up to the 2nd Bundesliga.

In 2005, all reserve teams from top German clubs changed their names. FC Bayern Munich Amateure became FC Bayern Munich II.

In 2008, the team was promoted to the new 3. Liga. They played there for three seasons. In 2010–11, they finished last and were moved down to the Regionalliga. This was the first time since 1973 they were not in the third division.

After finishing second in the first Regionalliga Bayern season in 2012–13, they won the league the next year. This meant they could try to get promoted back to the 3. Liga. However, they lost to Fortuna Köln in a playoff match.

In 2019, Bayern Munich II won the Regionalliga again. They beat Wolfsburg II in a two-game playoff to earn promotion to the 3. Liga. The next season, in 2019–20, they won the 3. Liga title! But because they are a reserve team, they could not be promoted to the 2. Bundesliga.

In the 2020–21 season, they finished 18th and were moved back down to the Regionalliga Bayern.

Home Stadium

Bayern II plays their home games at the Grünwalder Stadion. This stadium was once the home ground for the main Bayern Munich team until 1972. In 2012–13, the team played at Sportpark Heimstetten while the Grünwalder Stadion was being renovated.
