Mehmet Scholl is a famous German football player and manager. He was born on October 16, 1970, with the name Mehmet Tobias Yüksel.

He spent most of his playing career as an attacking midfielder for Bayern Munich. Mehmet Scholl won many important titles, including the UEFA Cup in 1996 and the UEFA Champions League in 2001. He also helped Germany win the Euro 1996. He won the German Championship (Bundesliga) eight times with Bayern Munich. Mehmet Scholl stopped playing professional football at the end of the 2006–07 season. He is known as one of Germany's most successful football players ever.

Playing for Clubs

Mehmet Scholl started playing football at a young age. He played for SV Nordwest Karlsruhe from 1976 to 1982. Then, he joined Karlsruher SC and played there from 1982 to 1992.

Joining Bayern Munich

In July 1992, Mehmet Scholl moved to Bayern Munich. He stayed with this club for the rest of his career, always wearing the number 7 shirt. He played his last professional game at the end of the 2006–07 season.

During his 15 seasons at Bayern, he played in 468 official matches. He scored 116 goals for the club. Eighty-eight of these matches were in European cup competitions, where he scored 18 goals.

Bundesliga Success

Mehmet Scholl is one of the most successful players in the Bundesliga, which is Germany's top football league. He won the championship eight times.

He played his first Bundesliga game on April 21, 1990, for Karlsruher SC. He came into the game in the 78th minute and scored a goal in the 90th minute! Overall, he scored 98 goals in 392 Bundesliga matches. Eleven of these goals were for Karlsruhe, and 87 were for Bayern.

Fans and experts praised Scholl for his amazing skills. He was known for his technical ability, creative playmaking, great dribbling, and powerful free kicks. In 2001, other professional players voted him Player of the Year. In 2005, Bayern Munich fans voted him one of the club's eleven greatest players of all time.

Playing for Germany

Mehmet Scholl played 36 matches for the German national team between 1995 and 2002. He scored eight goals for his country.

Euro 1996 Victory

He was part of the German team that won Euro 1996. He played in the quarter-final, semi-final, and the final match. In the final, when the Czech Republic was leading 1–0, Mehmet was replaced by Oliver Bierhoff. Bierhoff then scored two goals, helping Germany win the match and becoming very famous.

Euro 2000 and Injuries

Scholl also played in all three of Germany's games at Euro 2000. He scored Germany's only goal in that tournament against Romania.

Throughout his career, Mehmet Scholl often suffered from injuries. These injuries made it hard for him to keep a regular spot on the national team. Because of this, he decided to retire from the national team before the 2002 FIFA World Cup. This means he is one of Germany's most successful players who never played in a World Cup.

Popularity with Fans

Mehmet Scholl was very popular among German football fans. They loved his personality and his unique skills. Before the 2006 World Cup, over 100,000 people signed an online petition. It was called "Mehmet für Deutschland" (Mehmet for Germany). They wanted to convince the coach, Jürgen Klinsmann, to include Scholl in the team. Even with all this support, Scholl was not chosen.

After retiring as a player, Mehmet Scholl started coaching. On April 27, 2009, he became the temporary head coach for Bayern Munich II. This is the reserve team for Bayern Munich.

He took over from Hermann Gerland, who became an assistant coach for the main team. Scholl also continued to coach the under-13 team. In July 2009, he became the permanent manager of Bayern II. He left the team on June 30, 2010, to get his coaching license.

Scholl returned to coach Bayern Munich II again. In January 2013, he announced that he would leave the team at the end of the 2012–13 season. He wanted to focus on his job as a TV football expert, which was difficult to do while coaching.

Personal Life

Mehmet Scholl was born in Karlsruhe. His father, Ergin Yüksel, was Turkish, and his mother, Hella Yüksel, was German. When he was five years old, his parents divorced. His mother then married Hermann Scholl, and Mehmet took his stepfather's last name.

He has also released two successful music collections, called "mixtapes." These mixtapes featured his favorite bands. The title of his collection, "Mehmet Scholl kompiliert – Vor dem Spiel ist nach dem Spiel," is a play on words from a famous football saying. He explained that he listens to this music before and after games, and even in the car.

Mehmet Scholl is not officially part of any religion. However, he is very interested in the ideas and teachings of Buddhist principles.

After he stopped playing football, he started playing nine-pin bowling (Kegeln). This is a sport he was very good at when he was younger.
