Mehmet Tobias Scholl (born Mehmet Tobias Yüksel; 16 October 1970) is a German football manager and former player.

He spent most of his playing career as an attacking midfielder for Bayern Munich. He won many important titles, including the UEFA Cup in 1996, the Euro 1996 with Germany, and the UEFA Champions League in 2001. He also won eight German Championships with Bayern Munich. Mehmet Scholl retired in 2007 as one of Germany's most successful football players ever.

Playing Career Highlights

Mehmet Scholl started playing football for SV Nordwest Karlsruhe when he was just six years old. He then joined Karlsruher SC in 1982. In July 1992, he moved to Bayern Munich, where he stayed for the rest of his career. He always wore the number 7 shirt for Bayern.

Scholl played his last professional game at the end of the 2006–07 season. During his 15 years at Bayern, he played in 468 matches and scored 116 goals. He played 88 of these matches in European competitions, scoring 18 goals.

Success in the Bundesliga

Mehmet Scholl was one of the most successful players in the Bundesliga, which is Germany's top football league. He won the league championship eight times with Bayern Munich.

He made his first Bundesliga appearance on 21 April 1990 for Karlsruher SC. He came on as a substitute and scored his team's fifth goal in the 90th minute. In total, he scored 98 goals in 392 Bundesliga matches.

Fans and experts praised Scholl for his amazing skills. He was known for his technical ability, creative playmaking, great dribbling, and powerful free kicks. In 2001, other professional players voted him "Player of the Year." In 2005, Bayern Munich fans chose him as one of the club's eleven greatest players of all time.

International Football

Mehmet Scholl played 36 matches for the German national team between 1995 and 2002. He scored eight goals for his country.

He was part of the German team that won Euro 96. In the final, when the Czech Republic was leading 1–0, Scholl was replaced by Oliver Bierhoff. Bierhoff then scored two goals, helping Germany win the match and becoming famous. Scholl also played in all three of Germany's games at Euro 2000, scoring Germany's only goal in that tournament against Romania.

Injuries and Popularity

Throughout his career, Scholl often suffered from injuries. These injuries sometimes stopped him from playing regularly for the national team. Because of this, he decided to retire from the national team before the 2002 FIFA World Cup. This means he is one of Germany's most successful players who never got to play in a World Cup.

Mehmet Scholl was very popular among German football fans. They loved his personality and his unique football skills. Before the 2006 World Cup, over 100,000 people signed an online petition asking the coach, Jürgen Klinsmann, to include Scholl in the German squad. Even with all this public support, Scholl was not chosen for the team.

Coaching Career

After retiring as a player, Mehmet Scholl became a coach. On 27 April 2009, he was named the temporary head coach for Bayern Munich II, which is Bayern Munich's reserve team. He took over from Hermann Gerland.

In July 2009, he became the permanent manager of Bayern II. He left the team for a year in 2010 to get his coaching license. Scholl returned to coach Bayern Munich II again. In January 2013, he announced that he would leave the team at the end of the 2012–13 season. He wanted to focus more on his job as a TV football expert, which sometimes conflicted with his coaching duties.

Personal Life and Interests

Mehmet Scholl was born in Karlsruhe. His birth name was Mehmet Tobias Yüksel. His father was Turkish and his mother was German. When he was five, his parents divorced. His mother then married Hermann Scholl, and Mehmet took his stepfather's last name.

Besides football, Mehmet Scholl has other interests. In 2002 and 2003, he released two successful music collections called "Mehmet Scholl kompiliert – Vor dem Spiel ist nach dem Spiel." The title means "Before the game is after the game," which is a famous football saying. Scholl said he listens to this music all the time, before and after games. His music collections included songs by bands like The Beta Band, Sportfreunde Stiller, and Oasis.

He also co-hosts a monthly radio show called Mehmets Schollplatten on the Bayern 2 radio station.

Public Statements

When he was a young player, Mehmet Scholl made a famous, ironic comment about the German Green Party. He said, "hang the Greens, as long as there are still trees." Most people didn't understand that he was being ironic and trying to make a point about protecting trees. He was criticized for this. Later, when a journalist asked him which party he would vote for, Scholl jokingly replied, "Greens, of course – I cannot leave them hanging, can I?"

Scholl is not officially part of any religion, but he follows the ideas of Buddhist principles. After he retired from football, he started playing nine-pin bowling (Kegeln), a sport he was very good at when he was younger.
