The Moldova national football team represents Moldova in international football games. It is managed by the Moldovan Football Federation. The team's home stadium is Zimbru Stadium in Chișinău. Their head coach is Serghei Cleșcenco.
Moldova played its first game on July 2, 1991, against Georgia. This was just before the Soviet Union broke up. The team has had some exciting results. In 2023, they beat Poland 3–2 after being down 0–2. They also tied 0–0 with the Czech Republic. In 2007, Moldova won 3–0 against Hungary. They also had a big 5–2 win over Montenegro in 2013. The team has not yet qualified for major tournaments like the UEFA European Championship or the FIFA World Cup.
In 1997, after Moldova lost to England, a British writer named Tony Hawks visited Moldova. He challenged and beat all 11 Moldovan international footballers at tennis. A movie about this, Playing the Moldovans at Tennis, was filmed in Chișinău and released in 2012.

Team History
Early Years: The 1990s
The Moldovan Football Federation started in 1990. Moldova's first official international football match was in 1991. They lost 4–2 to Georgia. Alexandru Spiridon scored the first goal in the team's history.
In 1992, Moldova played in the 1992 Jordan International Tournament. They achieved their biggest win ever, a 5–0 victory against Pakistan. In that game, Serghei Alexandrov scored four goals, which was Moldova's first hat-trick. Later, Iurie Miterev scored another hat-trick against Congo in the same tournament.
Moldova joined UEFA in 1993 and FIFA in 1994. Their first FIFA-recognized match was a 1–1 draw against the United States. Moldova tried to qualify for UEFA Euro 1996. They won their first competitive match 1–0 against Georgia. They beat Georgia twice and Wales once, finishing 4th in their group. Moldova then tried to qualify for the FIFA World Cup in 1998 but lost all their games. They also finished last in the UEFA Euro 2000 qualifying. However, they managed to get four draws in that campaign.
The 2000s: Ups and Downs
In the 2002 FIFA World Cup qualification, Moldova lost 6–0 to Sweden. This was their biggest defeat for almost 20 years. They finished second to last in their group, above Azerbaijan, whom they beat 2–0. For UEFA Euro 2004 qualifying, Moldova beat Austria and Belarus. They finished above Belarus in their group. In the 2006 FIFA World Cup qualification, Moldova finished last. But they did manage to draw with Norway and Scotland.
In 2006, Serghei Cleșcenco scored his 11th and final goal for Moldova. He was the top goalscorer until 2023. In UEFA Euro 2008 qualifying, Moldova finished fifth in their group. They earned 12 points, including wins against Bosnia and Herzegovina and Hungary. After these games, Moldova reached their highest ever FIFA Ranking of 37th in April 2008. In the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualification, Moldova finished last. They drew with Greece and Luxembourg twice.
The 2010s: Challenges and Milestones

Moldova beat Finland 2–0 in UEFA Euro 2012 qualifying. They finished above San Marino. In the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifying, they again finished above San Marino. They had a notable 5–2 win against Montenegro and draws with Ukraine and Poland. During UEFA Euro 2016 qualifying, Moldova drew 1–1 with Russia in Moscow. Alexandru Epureanu scored his last international goal in that match. He later became the first Moldovan player to reach 100 games for the national team. Moldova also lost 0–1 to Liechtenstein at home in this competition, finishing last. In the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification, Moldova finished last again, with two draws against Georgia.
In the first UEFA Nations League season (2018–19), Moldova played in League D, the lowest division. They finished third in their group, above San Marino. Their win over San Marino was their first competitive victory since 2014. In UEFA Euro 2020 qualifying, Moldova lost 0–1 to Andorra, finishing last in their group.
The 2020s: Recent Progress
Moldova was promoted to 2020–21 UEFA Nations League C due to a change in the competition's rules. They earned only one point, a draw with Kosovo, and finished last in their group. This meant they had to play relegation play-outs. In a friendly match during this period, Moldova lost 6–0 to Italy, which was their worst defeat at the time.
In the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification, Moldova earned only one point, a draw with the Faroe Islands. They also suffered their worst defeat ever, an 8–0 loss against Denmark. During these qualifiers, Moldova reached its lowest ever FIFA Ranking of 181st in October 2021. After losing to Kazakhstan in the Nations League play-outs, Moldova was moved back to 2022–23 UEFA Nations League D. They finished second in their group, tied on points with Latvia, but did not get promoted.
The UEFA Euro 2024 qualifying was a very important time for Moldova. They came very close to making history by qualifying for the Euro tournament. They earned ten points in their group and were undefeated at home. This included a surprising 3–2 comeback win against Poland. They were just one win away from qualifying for UEFA Euro 2024. However, an away loss to the Czech Republic in their final match ended their hopes. Ion Nicolaescu scored his 11th and 12th international goals in the 3–2 win against Poland. He became Moldova's top goal scorer. With 4 goals in the competition, he was the first Moldovan to be the top scorer of a qualifying group.
