The Cayman Islands national football team is the official football team for the Cayman Islands. It is managed by the Cayman Islands Football Association. This team is a member of FIFA and CONCACAF, which are big football groups.

Their home games are played at the Truman Bodden Stadium in George Town. The current head coach is Joey Jap Tjong. He took over in February 2024. Before him, the team had struggled, not winning a game for over nine years. But under a previous coach, Ben Pugh, they improved a lot. They moved up 13 spots in the FIFA rankings and won four out of six matches in the 2019–20 Nations League.

History of the Team

Early Years (1985–2000)

The Caymanian football team played its first international match on March 3, 1985. They played against Dominica in Roseau. They lost that game 2–1. Lee Ramoon, who later became the team's top scorer, scored their first goal.

They played in the 1991 Caribbean Cup and the 1994 Caribbean Cup, but didn't get past the first round. In 1995, the Cayman Islands helped host the Caribbean Cup. They did really well, reaching the semi-finals! They lost to Trinidad and Tobago 2–9. Then, they lost the 3rd place match to Cuba 0–3. They also played in the 1998 Caribbean Cup but didn't make it out of the group stage. They haven't reached the final stage of the Caribbean Cup since then.

The team first tried to qualify for the FIFA World Cup in 1998. They were knocked out by Cuba, losing both games 0–1 and 0–5.

Challenges and Changes (2000–2010)

Around 2000, the team tried to bring in some new players. These players had British passports but no strong ties to the Cayman Islands. FIFA, the world football body, stopped this. They said the players didn't meet the rules for playing for the Cayman Islands. Only one of those players, Barry Hayles, went on to play for another national team, Jamaica.

In the 2002 qualifiers, Cuba again knocked out the Cayman Islands. The scores were 4–0 (Cuba won) and 0–0 (a draw). This happened again in the 2006 qualifiers. Cuba won 1–2 and 4–0.

For the 2010 qualifiers, Bermuda eliminated the Cayman Islands. The total score was 4–2. But in this series, the Cayman Islands earned their first points away from home. They drew 1–1 against Bermuda in Hamilton on February 3, 2008. Allean Grant scored their goal.

Recent Years (2010–Present)

In the 2014 qualifiers, the Cayman Islands were in a group with El Salvador, the Dominican Republic, and Suriname. They lost five out of six games. They managed a 1–1 draw against the Dominicans on November 14, 2011. The team didn't play much for a few years after that.

They returned for the 2018 qualifiers. They played against Belize. The first game was a 0–0 draw. The second game was a 1–1 draw. Because Belize scored an "away goal," the Cayman Islands were eliminated. This means they didn't lose a single match but still didn't qualify for the World Cup!
