The Cayman Islands national football team represents the Cayman Islands in international football. The team is managed by the Cayman Islands Football Association. They are part of FIFA and CONCACAF, which are big football organizations.

Their home games are played at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex in George Town. The current head coach is Joey Jap Tjong. He took over in February 2024. Before him, the team had improved a lot under coach Ben Pugh, moving up in the FIFA rankings.

Team History

Early Years: 1985–2000

The Cayman Islands football team played its first international match on March 3, 1985. They played against Dominica in Roseau and lost 2–1. Lee Ramoon, who later became the team's top scorer, scored their first goal.

The team took part in the 1991 Caribbean Cup and the 1994 Caribbean Cup, but they did not get past the first round. In 1995, the Cayman Islands helped host the 1995 Caribbean Cup. They made it all the way to the semi-finals! However, they lost to Trinidad and Tobago with a score of 2–9. They also lost the third-place match to Cuba 0–3. They last played in the Caribbean Cup finals in 1998.

The Cayman Islands first tried to qualify for the FIFA World Cup in 1998. They were eliminated by Cuba in the first round.

Challenges and Changes: 2000–2010

Around 2000, the team tried to bring in some players who had British passports but no strong ties to the Cayman Islands. This was an attempt to make the team stronger. However, FIFA stopped this because the players did not meet the rules for playing for the Cayman Islands. Only one of these players, Barry Hayles, went on to play for another national team, Jamaica.

In the 2002 and 2006 World Cup qualifiers, Cuba eliminated the Cayman Islands again. For the 2010 qualifiers, Bermuda knocked them out. But in that game, the Cayman Islands earned their first points away from home with a 1–1 draw.

Recent Times: 2010–Present

For the 2014 qualifiers, the Cayman Islands were in a group with El Salvador, the Dominican Republic, and Suriname. They managed one draw but lost most of their games.

The team did not play in the Caribbean Cup for a few years. They returned for the 2018 qualifiers against Belize. Both games ended in a draw (0–0 and 1–1). The Cayman Islands were eliminated because of the away goal rule, even though they did not lose a match! This is a rare thing in football.
