Team History
Early Years: 1936 to 1995
Saint Vincent and the Grenadines played their very first international football games in 1936. They played against their close neighbor, Barbados. Both games ended in a 1–1 draw, meaning they were tied.
In the 1960s and 1970s, the team played in the Windward Islands Tournament many times. They won this competition in 1965 and 1966. They also did well in the 1979 Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Championship. They reached the final stage and finished second, right behind Haiti. In the next championship in 1981, they again reached the final stage and finished second, this time behind Trinidad and Tobago.
The Vincy Heat qualified for the first-ever 1989 Caribbean Cup. They won their qualification group, including a huge 9–0 win against Sint Maarten. However, in the final tournament, they didn't make it out of their group. They finished last behind Grenada and Netherlands Antilles. They also reached the final stages of the Caribbean Cup in 1992 and 1993, but didn't have much luck, finishing last or second to last.
At the end of 1992, the team played in their first World Cup qualifiers. They passed the first rounds by beating Saint Lucia and Suriname. But in the next phase, they lost all six of their games. One of these losses was a very tough 11–0 defeat to Mexico at the Azteca Stadium. This was their biggest loss ever.
Playing in the 1996 Gold Cup
Saint Vincent and the Grenadines earned a spot in the 1996 CONCACAF Gold Cup by finishing second in the 1995 Caribbean Cup. To qualify for the Caribbean Cup, Vincy Heat had a massive 20–0 win over Montserrat across two games. They then won their group in the main competition and beat Cuba 3–2 in the semi-finals. However, Trinidad and Tobago was too strong in the final, winning 5–0.
In the 1996 Gold Cup, the Vincy Heat didn't win any games. They lost 5–0 to Mexico and 3–0 to Guatemala.
Recent Years: 1996 to Today
Saint Vincent and the Grenadines qualified for the 1996 Caribbean Cup again but finished last in their group. It took eleven years for them to qualify again. They made it to the 2007 tournament after an 8–0 win against Saint Lucia, where Shandel Samuel scored five goals. In that tournament, Vincy Heat only won one game, beating Guyana 2–0, and again finished last in their group.
In the 1998 World Cup qualifiers, the team beat Puerto Rico and then Saint Kitts and Nevis. But in the third round, they lost all six games, including an 11–3 loss to Honduras. For the 2002 qualifiers, they beat the U.S. Virgin Islands, Saint Kitts and Nevis, and Antigua and Barbuda. However, they still didn't win any games in the semi-finals.
They showed improvement in the 2006 qualifiers. They beat Nicaragua and had two wins against Saint Kitts and Nevis, finishing third in their group. But in the 2010 qualifiers, they were knocked out earlier than usual by Canada. In 2014 qualification, they won one game against Grenada. In 2018 World Cup qualification, they beat Guyana and Aruba to reach the fourth round. However, they didn't get any points in that round, losing all games and giving up 34 goals, including a 9–3 loss to Guatemala.
