The Montserrat national football team plays for Montserrat in international football games. Football is the second most popular sport there, after cricket. The team is managed by the Montserrat Football Association and plays at the Blakes Estate Stadium.
The Montserrat football team started in 1973. They have tried to qualify for the FIFA World Cup since 2002. However, they have been knocked out in the first round every time.
From 1995 to 2010, a volcano on the island was very active. This meant the team played only a few matches. Most of these games were away from home. Their first wins were against Anguilla in 1995. They won 3–2 at home and 1–0 away. Before 2018, they mostly lost their games, except for one draw against Anguilla and a big 7-0 win against the British Virgin Islands in 2012. Since 2018, Montserrat has become much more competitive.
On June 30, 2002, the same day as the 2002 FIFA World Cup final, Montserrat played Bhutan. This was a special friendly match called "The Other Final". Montserrat was the lowest-ranked team in the world then, and Bhutan was the second lowest. Bhutan won the game 4–0 in front of 15,000 fans.

Team History
The Montserrat national team is quite new to international football. Their first official match was on May 10, 1991. They lost 3–0 to Saint Lucia in the 1991 Caribbean Cup. Their next game was a 1–1 draw against Anguilla.
Montserrat played in the Caribbean Cup again the next year. They lost badly to Saint Kitts and Nevis and Antigua and Barbuda. In the 1994 Caribbean Cup, they faced the same teams. They were knocked out again, letting in 17 goals in two matches. The Montserrat Football Association (MFA) was formed in 1994. Like other Caribbean teams, the MFA joined CONCACAF.
On March 26, 1995, Montserrat played their first home international match. They beat Anguilla 3–2, which was their first ever win. They won against Anguilla again in the next game, 1–0. This win helped them move to the next round of the 1995 Caribbean Cup. It was also their only game without letting in a goal for 17 years. They then lost 20–0 to Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and were out of the competition.
Soon after, the Soufrière Hills volcano became active. It destroyed Plymouth, the capital of Montserrat. This made life on the island very difficult. Even with the volcano problems, the MFA joined FIFA in 1996. But the team didn't play another match for three years. Many players had moved away, especially to England.
After four years, the team played in the 1999 Caribbean Nations Cup. They lost 6–1 to the British Virgin Islands in the first round. Montserrat couldn't enter the 1998 FIFA World Cup because of the volcano. So, their first World Cup try was for the 2002 tournament. They lost 6–1 to the Dominican Republic. In 2001, the MFA visited The Football Association to get money for a new stadium. Soon after, the Blakes Estate Stadium opened.
The team's next game was on June 30, 2002. This was the day of the World Cup Final. Montserrat played Bhutan in "The Other Final." Bhutan won the friendly match 4–0 in Thimphu.
Montserrat tried to qualify for the World Cup again in 2006. They lost 20–0 to Bermuda in the first round. They also played in the 2005 Caribbean Cup but didn't get past the first stage. In 2008, they lost 7–1 to Suriname in the qualifiers for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
On May 19, 2012, the team played a friendly match against a Network Rail XI. The game ended in a 4–4 draw.
Montserrat got their first win since 1995 and their first FIFA win on September 9, 2012. They beat the British Virgin Islands 7–0 in a 2012 Caribbean Championship qualifying match.
Montserrat's luck changed a lot in 2018. Willie Donachie became coach, and the CONCACAF Nations League started. The team won three of their four qualifying games. They just missed out on qualifying for the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup because of goal difference. In the first Nations League season, they finished second in their group. They had two wins, two draws, and two losses. This kept them in the second tier of the league.
After Willie Donachie, Matt Lockwood was head coach and technical director in 2022. Craig Easton and David Preece joined as assistant coaches in March 2023. Just months later, on September 8, Lee Bowyer became the Montserrat manager. Steve Gallen was his assistant. In their first game, they beat Barbados with a goal in the 99th minute. This put them second in their CONCACAF Nations League group. As of July 2025, Angus Eve is the current manager.
World Rankings
Because of their past results, the Montserrat team has often been low in the FIFA World Rankings. After losing to Bhutan in "The Other Final," they dropped to 203rd place. This made them the lowest-ranked team in the world. In July 2004, they reached a new low of 205th. In July 2006, they reached their highest rank of 196th.
Their success in the CONCACAF Nations League qualifiers and the first season of the league helped them rise to 184th. The team has also been low in the unofficial World Football Elo Ratings. These rankings are based directly on match results.
Team Colours
Since their first match in 1991, Montserrat has usually worn green as their main colour. This has been plain green or green and white stripes. Their away kit is currently a red jersey, shorts, and socks.
