The Bermuda national football team plays for Bermuda in international football (also known as soccer). The team is managed by the Bermuda Football Association. This association is part of CONCACAF, which is the main football body for North America, Central America, and the Caribbean. The team is often called the Gombey Warriors.

History of the Gombey Warriors

Early Years (1964–1992)

Bermuda played its first international match on August 10, 1964. They faced Iceland in Reykjavík, losing 4–3 in a close game. A few years later, in 1967, Bermuda reached the final of the Pan American Games. They lost 4–0 to Mexico.

In 1968, Bermuda tried to qualify for the 1970 FIFA World Cup for the first time. They were in a group with the United States and Canada. They managed one draw (0–0 against Canada) but lost their other games, so they didn't move forward. In 1969, they lost to Mexico in a qualifying round, but they did beat Mexico 2–1 at home in Bermuda.

The 1970s started with another loss to Mexico in the 1971 CONCACAF Championship qualification. However, Bermuda won two bronze medals in the Central American and Caribbean Games in 1974 and 1978. The 1980s were quieter for the Gombey Warriors. They only played in the 1982 Central American and Caribbean Games, finishing fourth.

Between 1967 and 1987, Bermuda also played in qualifiers for the Olympic soccer tournament. They never made it to the main tournament. During this time, they had some tough losses, including two 8–0 defeats against Canada and Mexico.

Building Up (1992–2013)

After not playing in World Cup qualifiers for a long time, Bermuda returned for the 1994 tournament. They beat Haiti in the first round. This was thanks to the away goals rule, after a 1–0 win at home and a 2–1 loss away. In the next stage, they were grouped with Jamaica, Canada, and El Salvador. They finished last, but they had a big 1–0 win against El Salvador. For the 1998 World Cup qualifiers, Bermuda pulled out of the competition.

The Gombey Warriors came back for the 2002 World Cup qualifiers. They easily beat the British Virgin Islands with scores of 5–1 and 9–0. However, they then lost to Antigua and Barbuda on the away goal rule. In the qualifiers for the 2006 FIFA World Cup, Bermuda had their biggest win ever, crushing Montserrat 13–0. They were later knocked out by El Salvador.

For the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, Bermuda beat the Cayman Islands. But they were stopped by Trinidad and Tobago, even though Bermuda won one game away from home. In the 2014 World Cup qualifiers, Bermuda beat Trinidad and Tobago again (2–1). Still, they couldn't make it to the next round.

Bermuda also started playing regularly in the Caribbean Cup qualifiers from 1997. They never reached the final tournament, but their best result was in 2007 when they made it to the second knockout round. In July 2013, Bermuda won a gold medal at the 2013 Island Games held in Hamilton. This competition is not officially recognized by FIFA.

Recent Times (2015–Present)

In 2015, Bermuda played in the 2018 World Cup Qualifiers. They defeated the Bahamas 5–0 over two matches. In the second round, they faced Guatemala, drawing 0–0 but then losing 1–0. This meant they didn't reach the third round. Bermuda also returned to the Caribbean Cup qualifiers. They lost to Cuba but beat French Guiana to move to the next round. However, they were then eliminated after losing to the Dominican Republic and French Guiana.

In 2019, Bermuda made history by joining the CONCACAF Nations League. They qualified for League A, which also gave them a chance to play in their first ever CONCACAF Gold Cup. In League A, they played against Mexico and Panama. They finished last in their group. This meant they had to play in a special qualifying round for the Gold Cup. They beat Barbados 8–1 but then lost to Haiti 4–1, so they didn't make it to the Gold Cup.

FIFA Series Tournament

In 2024, FIFA invited Bermuda to play in the 2024 FIFA Series matches. These games were held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. This was special because Bermuda got to play against a team from outside their usual CONCACAF region for the first time. On March 22, 2024, Bermuda played against Brunei from the AFC. Bermuda won the match 2–0.
