History of Dominica Football
Early Days of the Team
Dominica played its very first international soccer game in 1932. They won that match 1–0 against Martinique. In the 1940s, they joined the 1948 Coupe des Caraibes tournament. They lost to Martinique 5–0 in the first round. However, they still got to play because another team, Trinidad and Tobago, pulled out. In the main competition, they faced Martinique again and lost 6–0, which ended their run.
During the 1960s and 1970s, Dominica often played in the Windward Islands Tournament. They had a great year in 1971, winning the competition. They beat Saint Vincent and Grenada both by a score of 3–0. They also had a 2–2 draw against Saint Lucia. In the 1980s, Dominica regularly tried to qualify for the CFU Championship. However, they couldn't reach the main tournament.
The 1990s and New Challenges
The Caribbean Cup started in 1989. Dominica managed to qualify for the group stage in the 1994 tournament. They didn't get past the first round, though. They lost 5–0 to the host team, Trinidad and Tobago, and 4–0 to Guadeloupe. Their only positive result was a 1–1 draw with Barbados.
They qualified again for the 1998 Caribbean Cup. But they were eliminated in the first round once more. They lost all three games: 5–1 to Martinique, 2–1 to Antigua and Barbuda, and 8–0 to Trinidad and Tobago. Since then, Dominica has not made it back to the final stage of the Caribbean Cup.
Dominica first took part in World Cup qualifiers for the 1998 World Cup. They beat Antigua and Barbuda in the first round. The scores were 3–3 at home and 3–1 away, giving them a 6–4 win overall. In the second round, they lost to Barbados with two 1–0 defeats.
2000s to Today
In the 2002 World Cup qualifiers, Dominica lost to Haiti 7–1 over two games. For the 2006 qualifiers, they first beat the Bahamas 4–2 overall. Then, they faced a very strong Mexican team. Mexico beat them 10–0 in the first game and 8–0 in the second.
In 2010, Dominica had their biggest win ever. On October 15, 2010, they beat the British Virgin Islands 10–0. Striker Kurlson Benjamin scored 5 goals in that amazing game! This was during the first qualifying round of the 2010 Caribbean Cup.
The next year, in the 2014 World Cup qualifiers, Dominica played against Panama and Nicaragua. They lost all four of their matches. They didn't score any goals and gave up 11. They were also knocked out of the 2018 World Cup qualifiers by Canada, who won 6–0 over two games.
