Team History and Achievements
The Saint Lucia national football team first tried to qualify for the FIFA World Cup in 1992. This was for the 1994 World Cup. They were knocked out in the first round by Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
World Cup Qualifiers: A Closer Look
In the 2014 World Cup qualifiers, Saint Lucia played against Aruba. They lost the first game 4–2. But in the second game, Saint Lucia won 4–2. This meant the score was tied, so they went to extra time. Then, they had a penalty shootout. Saint Lucia won the shootout 5–4 and moved on!
After that, Saint Lucia was in a group with Canada, Saint Kitts and Nevis, and Puerto Rico. They finished last in their group. They got one draw and five losses. This meant they were out of the World Cup qualifiers.
In 2014, the team won the Windward Islands Tournament. They beat Dominica 2–0 and Grenada 1–0. They also tied with Saint Vincent & the Grenadines.
Partnerships and Recent Events
The Saint Lucia Football Association worked with Carlisle United, an English football club. This partnership allowed four Saint Lucian players to try out for Carlisle United each year. In return, Carlisle United got the first chance to sign these players professionally.
Saint Lucia was supposed to play in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers. However, FIFA announced that the team decided to withdraw before their first match.
