The UEFA Euro 2032 is a big football tournament. It is also known as the 2032 UEFA European Football Championship. This event happens every four years. It is organized by UEFA for men's national football teams.

This time, Italy and Turkey will host the tournament together. It is planned to happen between June and July 2032. Italy has hosted parts of the European Championship before. They hosted in 1968, 1980, and some games of 2020 in Rome. This will be the first time Turkey hosts matches for this championship.

How Countries Bid to Host Euro 2032

Hosting a big football tournament like the Euro is a huge deal. Countries compete to show they are the best choice. They need to prove they have the right stadiums and facilities.

Stadium Requirements for Hosting

To host the Euro, a country or countries must offer ten stadiums. These stadiums need to be a certain size:

  • One stadium must have at least 60,000 seats.
  • One or two stadiums should have at least 50,000 seats.
  • Four stadiums must have at least 40,000 seats.
  • Three stadiums need to have at least 30,000 seats.

Timeline for Bidding

UEFA, the organization in charge, set a clear timeline for countries to bid. This process happened at the same time as the bidding for Euro 2028. Countries could choose to bid for either tournament.

Here are the main steps:

  • December 17, 2021: UEFA officially invited countries to apply.
  • March 23, 2022: This was the last day to say you wanted to bid.
  • March 30, 2022: Bidding rules were given to interested countries.
  • April 5, 2022: The countries that officially bid were announced.
  • April 28, 2022: A meeting was held for all bidders to learn more.
  • November 16, 2022: Countries handed in their first bid documents.
  • April 12, 2023: The final bid documents were submitted.
  • October 10, 2023: Countries presented their bids, and the hosts were announced.

Who Bid to Host?

UEFA received interest from three different groups. One bid was later not allowed.

  • Italy and Turkey: These two countries first bid separately. But on July 28, 2023, they decided to join their bids. They asked UEFA if they could work together to host Euro 2032. This new joint bid was then checked by UEFA. It was approved at the meeting on October 10.
    • Italy's Original Bid: The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) had thought about bidding since 2019. After Italy won Euro 2020, the idea became stronger. Italy had hosted the tournament before in 1968 and 1980. They also hosted four matches of Euro 2020 in Rome. Italy decided to focus on the 2032 tournament instead of 2028. This gave them more time to improve stadiums. In November 2022, Italy showed plans for eleven cities to be involved.
    • Turkey's Original Bid: The Turkish Football Federation also showed interest. They wanted to host either Euro 2028 or Euro 2032.

Bids Not Accepted

  • Russia: Russia also announced a bid on March 23. However, UEFA had banned Russian clubs and the national team from playing in competitions. This was due to the situation in Ukraine. Because of this, UEFA said Russia's bids for both 2028 and 2032 were not allowed.

How Teams Qualify

Since Italy and Turkey are the hosts, their national teams automatically get a spot in the tournament. They don't have to play in the qualifying games. The other teams will earn their spots through a special qualifying tournament.
