The Andorra national football team (called Selecció de futbol d'Andorra in Catalan) represents the small country of Andorra in men's international football games. The team is managed by the Andorran Football Federation. Andorra is one of the smallest countries in Europe, so its football team has not had much success.

Andorra's first official game was a friendly match against Estonia in 1996, which they lost 6–1. Since the qualifying games for the UEFA Euro 2000 tournament, Andorra has played in qualifiers for every European Championship and FIFA World Cup. They have won only a few matches since FIFA recognized them in 1996.

Team History and Milestones

Early Years and First Games

The Andorran Football Federation was created in 1994. The country's own football league started in 1995. However, the national team could not play in big championships until FIFA and UEFA accepted them in 1996. Andorra's first match was against Estonia in Andorra La Vella, where they lost 6–1.

Andorra's first game in a FIFA-approved competition was a 3–1 loss to Armenia in September 1998. This was a qualifier for UEFA Euro 2000. Andorra lost all ten of their qualifying games for that tournament. They found it especially hard to play away from home.

World Cup and Euro Qualifiers

For their first FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign, Andorra was in a group with teams like Cyprus, Estonia, and Portugal. They lost their first game 1–0 to Estonia. In their next game, they lost 3–2 to Cyprus but scored their first World Cup qualifying goals. They lost all their matches in that campaign.

In the qualifiers for UEFA Euro 2004, Andorra also lost every game. They scored their only goal in a 2–1 away loss to Bulgaria. The scores were closer in some games, showing improvement.

First Wins and Recent Successes

The qualifying games for the 2006 FIFA World Cup were quite good for Andorra. They won their first competitive game ever, beating Macedonia 1–0 at home. Marc Bernaus, an Andorran midfielder, scored the goal. Andorra also had two draws in this campaign, 0–0 against Macedonia and 0–0 against Finland.

After many years without a win, Andorra beat San Marino 2–0 in a friendly match in February 2017. This ended a 12-year period without a victory. In June 2017, Andorra achieved another big win, beating Hungary 1–0 in a World Cup qualifier. This was their first competitive win since 2004. These wins helped Andorra move up 57 spots in the FIFA rankings to 129th place, which was their second-best position ever.

In March 2018, Andorra won another friendly game, beating Liechtenstein 1–0. This was their sixth win in total.

UEFA Nations League and Other Achievements

In 2018, Andorra joined the new UEFA Nations League. They finished at the bottom of their group but had four draws and no losses at home.

On October 11, 2019, Andorra won 1–0 against Moldova in the UEFA Euro 2020 qualifying competition. This ended a long 56-match streak without a win in Euro qualifiers. A month later, they drew an away game against Albania, which meant they avoided finishing last in a qualifying group for the first time.

In the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, Andorra had more success. They beat San Marino 2–0 at home in September 2021. In October 2021, they beat San Marino again, this time 3–0 away from home. This was Andorra's biggest victory ever! It was also the first time they scored 3 goals in one game and won an away match. They also managed to get two wins in the same qualifying phase for the first time.

In March 2022, Andorra beat St. Kitts and Nevis 1–0 at home. This was their first win against a team from outside Europe. A few days later, they beat Grenada 1–0, another non-European team. In June 2022, in the UEFA Nations League, Andorra won 2–1 at home against Liechtenstein. This was their first win in this competition. They finished this Nations League edition with 8 points, their best result in any group stage.

Home Stadiums

Estadi Comunal Vella
Andorra's former home stadium, Estadi Comunal d'Andorra la Vella.

From 1996 to 2014, Andorra played their home games at the Estadi Comunal d'Andorra la Vella in Andorra la Vella. This stadium can hold 1,800 people. Since September 2014, the national team has played at the new Estadi Nacional, which can hold 3,306 fans.

A new home stadium, Nou Estadi Encamp, is being built and is expected to open in June 2025.

Sometimes, Andorra has played home matches outside their country. For example, they played against France and England in Barcelona, Spain, at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys and the RCDE Stadium.

Team Reputation

Andorra is known as a smaller team in world football because they have won fewer games than they have lost. This is mainly because Andorra has a very small population, one of the smallest in Europe. This means there are not many players to choose from. Most players are not full-time professionals because the Andorran league is only part-time. Since they started playing in 1996, their average FIFA ranking has been around 163rd.

However, as mentioned, they have had some important wins and draws in recent years, showing they are improving.
