The Kosovo national football team represents Kosovo in men's international football matches. The team is managed by the Football Federation of Kosovo and is part of FIFA, the global football organization.

Team History

Early Matches

First Games Before Independence

Kosovo played its first friendly football match on November 29, 1942. This game was part of celebrations for Albania's independence. Kosovo lost 2–0 to Tirana.

Later, on November 8, 1967, Kosovo played as an autonomous region of Yugoslavia. They had a friendly match against Yugoslavia, which ended in a 3–3 draw. Players from both Albanian and Serbian backgrounds were on the team.

Kosovo Players in Yugoslavia's Team

Many talented players from Kosovo joined the Yugoslavia national football team. For example, Fadil Vokrri and Stevan Stojanović were part of Yugoslav squads. Three other players from Kosovo, Fahrudin Jusufi, Milutin Šoškić, and Vladimir Durković, even won a gold medal at the 1960 Summer Olympics. They also won a silver medal at the 1960 European Nations' Cup.

After Yugoslavia's Breakup

After Yugoslavia broke apart, the Football Federation of Kosovo and the Albanian Football Association agreed to play a friendly match. This game happened on February 14, 1993. It was Kosovo's first match after the breakup and ended in a 3–1 loss to Albania.

During UN Administration

After the Kosovo War, Kosovo played another friendly match against Albania on September 7, 2002. They lost 1–0 at home.

One of Kosovo's most important early wins was a 1–0 victory over Saudi Arabia on June 15, 2007. This was special because Saudi Arabia had played in the FIFA World Cup. Kristian Nushi scored the winning goal from a penalty kick. On April 22, 2006, Kosovo had its biggest win, beating Monaco 7–1.

Becoming Independent in Football

First Match After Independence

On February 17, 2010, after Kosovo declared its independence, the team played a friendly match against Albania. Kosovo lost 3–2 at home. This match also helped raise money for people affected by floods in Shkodër.

Joining International Football

On May 6, 2008, Kosovo applied to join FIFA. However, their application was not accepted at first. FIFA even said Kosovo couldn't play friendly matches against FIFA member teams.

In September 2012, several famous players with Kosovo Albanian roots, like Lorik Cana, Granit Xhaka, Valon Behrami, and Xherdan Shaqiri, asked FIFA to let Kosovo play friendly matches. Many other Albanian footballers from Kosovo also signed this request.

On February 6, 2013, FIFA allowed Kosovan club teams to play friendly games against clubs from FIFA member countries. But they couldn't use national symbols like the flag or anthem.

Finally, on March 5, 2014, the Kosovo national team was allowed to play its first official international friendly match against Haiti. The game ended in a 0–0 draw. After this, Kosovo played six more friendly matches in 2014. Their first win was 1–0 against Oman.

Joining UEFA and FIFA

In September 2015, Kosovo asked to join UEFA, the European football body. On May 3, 2016, UEFA accepted Kosovo after a vote. Just ten days later, Kosovo was also accepted into FIFA during their meeting in Mexico. This was a huge step for Kosovo football.

First Major Tournaments

World Cup and Euro Qualifiers

Kosovo started playing in the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification games. They were in a group with strong teams like Croatia and Turkey. Their first big surprise was a 1–1 draw against Finland. However, this was their only point, and they finished last in the group.

After the World Cup qualifiers, Kosovo played in the 2018–19 UEFA Nations League D. They won their group without losing a single game, which meant they got to play in the play-offs for UEFA Euro 2020.

In the UEFA Euro 2020 qualifying, Kosovo was in a group with teams like England and Czech Republic. They became a "dark horse" team, surprising everyone by beating Bulgaria, Montenegro, and even the Czech Republic at home. They went 15 matches without a loss, winning 11 of those games! This was their longest unbeaten streak ever. They lost 5–3 to England in an exciting match. In a key game against the Czechs, Kosovo needed a win to qualify directly for the Euros. They took an early lead but lost 2–1, so they went to the play-offs instead. Still, this was Kosovo's biggest success so far.

Recent Challenges and Growth

In the 2020–21 UEFA Nations League C, Kosovo hoped to move up to League B. However, they had a tough time, with many key players missing. They drew 1–1 with Moldova and lost 2–1 to Greece.

In the UEFA Euro 2020 qualifying play-offs, Kosovo lost 2–1 to North Macedonia and was eliminated. The year 2020 ended with more losses and draws, but a win against Moldova helped them stay in League C for the next season.

For the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, Kosovo played in a group with teams like Spain and Sweden. They played some competitive games but didn't qualify. In the 2022–23 UEFA Nations League, Kosovo showed improvement, finishing second in their group. They won against Cyprus and Northern Ireland. This good performance gave them a chance to qualify for UEFA Euro 2024 through the Nations League play-offs.

In the UEFA Euro 2024 qualifying, Kosovo was in a group with Andorra, Belarus, Israel, Romania, and Switzerland. They had several draws and finished fourth, missing out on direct qualification.

In the 2024–25 UEFA Nations League, Kosovo played in League C. They started with a loss to Romania but then had several strong wins against Cyprus and Lithuania. A match against Romania on November 15, 2024, was stopped early and later given as a 3–0 loss to Kosovo due to problems during the game. Despite this, Kosovo finished second in their group and earned a spot in the promotion play-offs to League B. In March 2025, Kosovo played Iceland in the play-offs. They won both games, 2–1 at home and 3–1 away, with a total score of 5–2. This meant Kosovo was promoted to League B of the UEFA Nations League for the first time ever!

Team Identity

Nicknames

The Kosovo national football team is often called "Dardanët" (which means "Dardanians"). They've also had other nicknames:

  • "Shqipëria B" ("Albania B") — Before 2016, Kosovo and Albania often exchanged players. So, Kosovo was sometimes called "Albania B" because many players who couldn't play for Albania came to Kosovo.
  • "Ekipi i Kosovës" ("Team Kosovo") — This name was used around 2009–2010 to avoid problems with UEFA and FIFA before Kosovo was officially recognized.
  • "Brazili i Ballkanit" ("Brazil of the Balkans") — This fun nickname was given to the team when they had their amazing 15-match unbeaten streak in 2018–2019.

Kits and Crest

Kosovo kit in the first competitive match against Finland in September 2016.

Before Kosovo declared independence, their football kits were mostly red and black. After independence, the kits became mainly blue and yellow. In 2016, Kosovo signed a deal with the Spanish company Kelme to be their first official kit supplier. Since 2023, the Italian company Erreà has been supplying their kits.

Home Stadium

Fadil Vokrri Stadium 2024
Fadil Vokrri Stadium is Kosovo's main home stadium.

Kosovo's main home stadium is the Fadil Vokrri Stadium in Pristina, which can hold 13,500 fans. It's the second-largest stadium in Kosovo. The team also used the Adem Jashari Olympic Stadium in Mitrovica and the Loro Boriçi Stadium in Albania when their own stadiums were being renovated. Plans for a new, larger Kosovo National Stadium with 30,000 seats have been discussed, but construction is currently on hold.

Team Rivalries

Albania

The matches between Kosovo and Albania are known as the "Brotherly derby." This rivalry goes way back to 1942. After Yugoslavia broke up, the teams played again in 1993. These games are special because of the close ties between the two nations.

Romania

Kosovo and Romania have a strong rivalry, partly because Romania does not recognize Kosovo's independence. Their matches have often been controversial. In a September 2023 Euro 2024 qualifying game, Kosovo players left the field because of fan behavior. The match continued, and Romania won 2–0. In their 2024–25 UEFA Nations League games, tensions were high, and one match was stopped early. Romania was later awarded a 3–0 win.
