Çaykur Rizespor Kulübü is a professional football club from Rize, a city on Turkey's eastern Black Sea coast. The team plays in the Süper Lig, which is the top football league in Turkey.
The club started on May 19, 1953. Its first colors were green and yellow, showing the area's connection to tea and citrus fruits. In 1968, Rizespor joined with two other local clubs, Fener Gençlik and Güneşspor. This led to new official colors: green for Rize's green hills and blue for the Black Sea. The club has used these colors ever since.
Since 1990, the Turkish state-owned tea company Çaykur has sponsored Rizespor. This is why the club's full name became Çaykur Rizespor Kulübü. This partnership also added a tea leaf to the club's badge.
Çaykur Rizespor plays its home games at Rize City Stadium. This modern stadium is close to the coast and has great views. The club is known for its loyal fans and its important role in representing the Black Sea region in Turkish football.

Club History
Early Football Clubs in Rize
Before Çaykur Rizespor, there were other sports clubs in Rize.
Rize İdman Yurdu
Rize İdman Yurdu was the first sports club in Rize. Young people started it after World War I. It began on the first anniversary of the city's freedom from Russian occupation. Suphi Bey and İsmail Kentay helped a lot to create the club. They set up a small clubhouse with two rooms.
Rize İdman Yurdu focused on sports like football and gymnastics. They also started a music group, which later became the Rize City Band. A Member of Parliament, Süleyman Sudi Sofuoğlu, gave them the instruments.
Şark İdman Ocağı
Şark İdman Ocağı started on June 25, 1923. It operated from a building called Barış Oteli. Many people helped found this club, including Ali Kemal Kavrakoğlu and Rıfkı Tuzcuoğlu.
Having two rival clubs in the city made football exciting. People loved watching the games, even though it was a new idea for many. This shows how much passion there was for sports in Rize, even 80 years ago.
First Local Derbies
The two clubs, Şark İdman Ocağı and Rize İdman Yurdu, often played against each other. These matches were like early local rivalries. On November 7, 1923, Şark İdman Ocağı won a memorable game 1–0. Captain İsmet Bey was the referee.
These teams also traveled to play games in other cities like Trabzon and Samsun. Besides football, gymnastics was also very important, with Suphi Bey being a key figure in promoting it. Şark İdman Ocağı was active for about two years. Rize İdman Yurdu later became the basis for Rize Fener Gençlik Kulübü.
Founding Rizespor
The club we know as Rizespor was officially founded in Rize on May 19, 1953. This date was the 34th anniversary of the Turkish War of Independence. The goal was to help young people grow physically and culturally through sports.
The founding members included Yakup Temizel, Atıf Taviloğlu, Bilsel, Yaşar Tümbekçioğlu, and Muharrem Kürkçü. They chose "Yellow" for oranges and lemons, and "Green" for tea, which is still a symbol of Rize. Yaşar Dömekçioğlu was the first president.
For 15 years, from 1953 to 1968, Rizespor played as an amateur team. Many local players wore the club's jersey during this time.
In 1968, Rizespor became a professional club. This happened when it merged with Rize Güneşspor, Rizegücü, and Fener Youth Sports Club. They also changed their colors to Blue-Green. They started playing in the TFF 2. Lig. They almost got promoted earlier but lost a game 3–0 by forfeit, which was a big moment in Turkish football.
After a short time, they went back to Amateur Leagues. But they returned to the TFF 2. Lig in the 1978–1979 season as champions. This win allowed them to play in the TFF 1. Lig for the first time.
Recent Club History
On February 9, 1991, the club joined with Çaykur, a large public company in the Black Sea Region. From then on, they played as "Çaykur Rizespor Club."
The club was relegated from the Süper Lig in the 2001–02 season. However, they quickly returned to the Süper Lig after just one year. They stayed in the top league until the 2007–08 season, when they were relegated again.
From 2008 to 2013, the team played in the TFF 1. Lig. In the 2012–13 season, they finished second and were promoted back to the Süper Lig after five years. They were relegated again in the 2016–17 season. But in the 2017–18 season, they became champions of the TFF 1. Lig and were promoted to the Süper Lig once more.
In February 2015, the club announced plans to add 20 more sports. These included basketball, handball, volleyball, tennis, badminton, table tennis, mountaineering, rafting, swimming, gymnastics, athletics, judo, boxing, wrestling, sailing, canoeing, kayaking, rowing, cycling, and women’s football.
In the 2020–21 season, Çaykur Rizespor had a few different managers. They finished the league in 13th place. In the 2020–21 Turkish Cup, they were knocked out in the round of 16.
The 2021–22 season ended with the club finishing 17th and being relegated to the TFF 1. Lig. However, in the 2022–23 season, they finished second and were promoted back to the Süper Lig after just one year.
On June 13, 2023, İlhan Palut became the new coach. In his first season, he led Rizespor to a 9th-place finish in the Süper Lig.
Rivalries
Çaykur Rizespor has a big rivalry with Trabzonspor. This is known as the Black Sea derby. They are rivals because they are geographically close and have a long history of playing against each other.
Stadium
The club plays its home games at Rize City Stadium. They have used this stadium since the 2009–10 season. The first game at the stadium was on August 12, 2009. Çaykur Rizespor played against Fenerbahçe in a friendly match.
Supporters
Çaykur Rizespor has several passionate fan groups.
Rotasızlar
Rotasızlar is a fan group started in 2006. They are known for cheering for Çaykur Rizespor with full energy for the entire 90 minutes, both at home and away games. The group's name comes from how some older fans used to sit in different parts of the stadium each match. Now, the sea-side stand at the New Rize City Stadium is their home. They usually have 800–900 supporters at matches, sometimes even more than 2,000.
Atmacalar
Atmacalar was formed in 2013. It came from two newer fan groups, Göçebe and Derebeyler, joining together.
Mekansızlar
Mekansızlar started in 1999. This group also supports Çaykur Rizespor at home and away. It includes experienced fans of Rizespor. They usually stand behind the goal on the mountain side of the stadium. Mekansızlar is also called Dağdibi Cehennemi, which means "Hell of Dağdibi."
Crest and Colors
Before the 1968 merger, Rizespor's colors were green and yellow. Fener Gençlik used yellow and navy blue, and Güneşspor used yellow and red. When the three clubs combined, they chose new colors. They picked green to show Rize's rich nature and blue to represent the Black Sea. Since then, Rizespor has used green and blue as its official colors.
Rizespor's crest (logo) has changed over the years. The first logos had the letters "RSK" (Rize Spor Kulübü) with green and yellow colors. These colors represented tea and citrus, two important products from the area. Later designs used the full name "Rizespor" and the green and blue colors.
A very important part of every crest has been the tea leaf. This shows how connected the region is to tea production. Over time, the crest became more modern and simple. After the club joined with Çaykur, the name changed to “Çaykur Rizespor Kulübü”, and the crest was updated to show this. The tea leaf became more stylish, and red letters were added.
Even with all the changes, the main parts of the crest—the tea leaf and the green-blue colors—have stayed the same. This shows Rizespor's strong link to the culture, nature, and people of Rize.
