Encamp is a beautiful area in the small country of Andorra. It's one of Andorra's seven main regions, called parishes. You can find Encamp along the Valira d'Orient river.
The main town in this area is also called Encamp. Other smaller towns and villages here include Vila, El Pas de la Casa, El Tremat, La Mosquera, and Les Bons. In 2004, about 11,800 people lived in Encamp.
The center of Encamp town is about 1,300 meters (4,265 feet) above sea level. The highest mountain in the parish is Pic dels Pessons, which stands tall at 2,865 meters (9,400 feet). Encamp is special because it shares borders with both France and Spain.

Encamp has a climate similar to places near the ocean, even though it's in the mountains. This type of weather is called an oceanic climate.
The average temperature in Encamp throughout the year is about 9.8 degrees Celsius (49.6 degrees Fahrenheit). It rains or snows about 805.4 millimeters (31.7 inches) each year. May is usually the wettest month.
The warmest month is July, with an average temperature of about 18.9 degrees Celsius (66.0 degrees Fahrenheit). January is the coldest, averaging around 2.1 degrees Celsius (35.8 degrees Fahrenheit).

Radio History in Encamp
A radio station called Radio Andorra used to broadcast from a transmitter near Lake Engolasters in Encamp. It operated from August 7, 1939, until April 9, 1981. Even though the station is no longer active, you can still see the antenna standing at an elevation of 1,600 meters (5,249 feet).
What Encamp's Economy is Like
The main way people in Encamp make a living is through tourism. Many visitors come here for:
- Skiing in the winter
- Hiking and enjoying nature in the warmer months
There are also many shops in Encamp town. The parish also has a hydroelectric power station, which uses water to create electricity.
Getting Around Encamp
Roads and Tunnels
A new road tunnel is being built to connect Encamp with Anyós in the nearby parish of La Massana. This tunnel will make travel much faster, cutting journey times from 10-15 minutes down to just 5 minutes!
Cable Cars and Ski Lifts
- A cable car used to connect Encamp town with Lake Engolasters, but it has been taken down.
- However, there's a modern funitel (a type of cable car) built in 1998. It has two sections and connects Encamp with a high ridge at 2,500 meters (8,202 feet).
- This funitel is part of the huge Grandvalira ski resort. It allows skiers to easily travel between Encamp and other parts of the ski area, like El Pas de la Casa.
Learning in Encamp
Encamp is home to the Spanish international primary school, Escuela Española de la Vall d'Orient. This school provides education for younger students.
Famous People from Encamp
- Josep Carles Laínez (born in 1970 in Valencia) is a Spanish writer who has a home in Encamp.
- Verònica Canals i Riba is an important person in Andorra's government. She is currently the Minister of Tourism.
