Erling Braut Haaland (born 21 July 2000) is a professional footballer from Norway. He plays as a striker for the English club Manchester City and the Norway national team. Many people think he is one of the best players in the world. He is famous for his amazing speed, strength, smart positioning, and powerful shots near the goal. In his first season in the Premier League (2022–23), Haaland broke the record for the most goals scored by a player in one season, with 36 goals!

Haaland started his career in Norway with clubs like Bryne and Molde. Then, in 2019, he moved to Austria to play for Red Bull Salzburg. His great performances there led him to join the German club Borussia Dortmund. With Dortmund, he won the DFB-Pokal (German Cup) in 2021. In the summer of 2022, he moved to Manchester City. He helped the club win a special "treble" in his first season, meaning they won three major trophies: the Premier League, FA Cup, and UEFA Champions League. He scored 52 goals that season, which was a record for a Premier League player. Haaland was named both the Young Player and Player of the Season, being the first to win both in the same year.

Throughout his career, Haaland has won many individual awards and broken several records. These include the Golden Boy award in 2020 and being named Bundesliga Player of the Season in 2021. He has also been part of the FIFA FIFPro World11 (a team of the best players in the world) multiple times. In the Premier League, he holds records for most goals in a season and the fastest player to score two, three, four, and five hat-tricks. In 2023, he won the Premier League Golden Boot (for top scorer in England), the European Golden Shoe (for top scorer in Europe), and the Gerd Müller Trophy (for top goalscorer). That same year, he was named UEFA Men's Player of the Year and finished second in the Ballon d'Or award.

Haaland has played for Norway at different youth levels. In the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup, he won the Golden Boot award after scoring a record nine goals in a single match! He made his debut for the senior national team in September 2019. He is now Norway's all-time top goalscorer.

Early Life and Childhood

Erling Braut Håland was born on 21 July 2000 in Leeds, England. His father, Alfie Haaland, was playing for Leeds United in the Premier League at that time. In 2004, when Erling was three years old, his family moved back to Bryne, their hometown in Norway.

Besides playing football from a young age, Haaland also tried other sports as a child. These included handball, golf, and track and field. It is even said that when he was five, he set a world record for his age group in the standing long jump. He jumped 1.63 meters in 2006!

Club Career Highlights

Starting at Bryne

Haaland began his football journey at the age of five in the youth academy of his hometown club, Bryne.

He made his first senior appearance for Bryne FK on 12 May 2016, just before his 16th birthday. He played as a winger at first, but his coach soon moved him to his preferred position as a striker. Haaland played 16 senior games for Bryne before moving to Molde.

How Erling Haaland Plays

Haaland is known as a very strong and effective goalscorer. He is considered one of the best players in the world. He has all the skills of a complete centre forward. He uses his large size to hold the ball and help his teammates. He is very fast and makes smart runs to get behind defenders. He can dribble, create chances, and score with both feet and his head.

He often drops back to get the ball and help his team build up play. He then quickly sprints towards the goal. In the penalty area, he makes small, quick movements to find open space, making it very hard for defenders to mark him.

Haaland is also good at protecting the ball when defenders are close. His ability to run with the ball quickly helps create chances for others, especially during counter-attacks. Even though he doesn't touch the ball as much as some other strikers, his calm attitude, patience, and smart movement without the ball make a huge difference in how his team attacks.

Haaland looks up to famous players like Zlatan Ibrahimović and Cristiano Ronaldo. He also finds inspiration in players like Michu, Jamie Vardy, Sergio Agüero, and Robin van Persie. He has said that Virgil van Dijk and Sergio Ramos are two of the toughest defenders he has played against.

After scoring a goal, Haaland often does a "meditation" celebration, where he sits in the lotus position. This celebration has even been included in the FIFA video games.

Many football experts have praised Haaland. Gary Neville called him "truly unique" and said he has the skill of Wayne Rooney and the finishing ability of Harry Kane and Ronaldo. His manager, Pep Guardiola, believes Haaland can get even better. In 2022, Jürgen Klopp called Haaland the "best striker in the world" because of his amazing physical and technical skills. In 2024, FIFPRO (the global players' union) called him "the deadliest striker in football today."

Personal Life

Erling Haaland's father, Alfie Haaland, was also a professional footballer. His mother, Gry Marita Braut, was a heptathlon athlete. In 2017, Haaland said that his dream was to win the Premier League with Leeds, his birth city. His cousins, Jonatan Braut Brunes and Albert Tjåland, are also professional footballers.

Haaland practices meditation.

In 2016, Haaland and his Norway under-17 teammates, Erik Botheim and Erik Tobias Sandberg, formed a music group called Flow Kingz. They released a song called "Kygo jo," which has been viewed over 12 million times on YouTube.

In October 2024, Haaland announced that he and his girlfriend, Isabel Haugseng Johansen, were expecting their first child. Their child was born in December 2024.
